Pay : $22.00 per hour (Approximate annual salary $70,000 based on average scheduled hours of 3187, including holiday pay hours)

Schedule : Shift schedule 48 / 96

Reports to : Deputy Fire Chief

Job Summary :

Under general direction and limited supervision, the Fire Captain supports the Deputy Fire Chief in directing and coordinating all Jekyll Island Fire Department personnel activities. The Fire Captain is personally responsible for leading and managing all shift activities, responses, training, and crew actions. In addition, the Fire Captain serves as a department Training Officer. Those responsibilities include working with the other Fire Captains on planning, developing, delivering, and improving the department's training plan according to personnel performance and training mandates.

Description :

  • Respond immediately to fire alarms and other emergency calls; lead firefighting operations to protect life, property and restore normalcy using training, skill, and judgment in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Provide strong leadership, guidance, and regular feedback to assigned staff to ensure they have the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to deliver an optimal emergency response and departmental performance aligned with the department's Mission, Vision, and Values. Monitor and measure progress against established goals and outcomes and adapt strategies as necessary to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure crew readiness and awareness is at the highest level possible by regularly conducting training and drills tailored to the department's specific needs and challenges.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development among crew members.
  • Consistently project a positive public relations image by engaging in community outreach, fostering partnerships with other emergency response agencies, and promoting a culture of professionalism and service.
  • Administer comprehensive training programs that are relevant, engaging, and regularly evaluated to ensure continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Supervise firefighters operating and maintaining fire stations / equipment and ensure adherence to all JIA / JIFD policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ensure timely completion and accuracy of all required inspections, records, and reports for all department employees and establish a system of checks and balances to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • This position is a Critical Workforce position for the Jekyll Island Authority. This position is subject to mandatory recall to work before, during, and after a State of Emergency or other situations requiring additional public safety staffing.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisors, including special projects, committee assignments, and other tasks critical to the department's success.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements / Certifications (In good standing) :

  • A high school diploma, or GED, accepted by the Georgia Firefighter Standards & Training Council.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, GA residents must have Georgia Class A, B, E, or F within 60 days of employment. Candidates residing in another state must have the equivalent license classification.
  • Georgia Firefighter Certification.
  • Fire Officer 1 Certification.
  • Georgia Paramedic License or immediately obtainable.
  • Fire Instructor 1 Certification.
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Advance Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700
  • Preferred Certifications :

  • Fire Instructor 2 Certification
  • Fire Officer 2 Certification
  • Fire Inspector 1 Certification.
  • Additional knowledge and skills for the position :

  • Knowledge of standard emergency management principles, techniques, terminology, equipment, and materials, including extrication and search & rescue.
  • Knowledge of the response area.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm and suppression systems.
  • Knowledge of the National Incident Command System.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining specialized emergency equipment, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), extrication, and other common equipment.
  • Skill in performing emergency medical techniques, including CPR and first aid.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in communication, both oral and written.
  • Skill in the operation of a Personal Computer (PC) and Microsoft Office Programs. Skill in operating an Android Operating System (OS) Tablet and associated software used for job duties.
  • Physical Requirements / Working Conditions :

  • Ability to crouch, kneel, and / or bend up to one half hour per normal workday.
  • Ability to stand, walk, crouch, climb, kneel, crawl, bend at waist, or remain prone in an emergency.
  • Ability to work with arms bent up to two-thirds of working day, and with arms extended up to one-third of normal working day.
  • Ability to pass regular fit test and wear a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) mask while performing job functions that require the SCBA.
  • May be required to have arms extended for a longer time during an emergency.
  • Ability to push and pull with arms with a force of up to two pounds for one half hour each normal working day.
  • May be required to push and pull with arms with greater than fifty pounds of force during emergency.
  • May be required to twist and rotate arms during an emergency.
  • May be required to lift and carry heavy emergency equipment weighing up to seventy pounds.
  • May be required to balance with legs in an emergency. May be required to push and pull with legs with a force of over fifty pounds in an emergency.
  • Maybe required to pass an annual fit for duty physical and medical examination.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate objects and perform fine finger dexterity movements for up to one-third of a normal working day. This work involves eye-hand coordination and some bilateral coordination. May be required to grasp and manipulate objects and perform finer finger dexterity work with exceptional speed and bilateral coordination during emergency situations.
  • Indoor duty performed in a controlled temperature environment. However, you may be exposed to extreme temperatures or humid conditions in an emergency.
  • May be exposed to noisy environments during emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to vibration of body during emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, fire, infectious disease, and burns.
  • May be exposed to exhaust or chemical fumes, smoke odors, dusts, mists, and gases during emergency situations.
  • Performs work on even carpeted and tiled floor surfaces. May work on asphalt, concrete, or natural ground in an emergency. May be required to work on inclines or ramps, catwalks or scaffolding, or stairs and ladders. The working surface is dry but may be wet or greasy during emergency situations.
  • Performs work with direction. May work with one or two other people. May work with a large group of people.
  • Work is conducted during any time of day or night as needed for emergencies.
  • May be required to work additional hours when minimum staffing levels cannot be achieved through voluntary means.
  • Employees are subject to call back and therefore required to have a telephone available.
