Job Summary :
Under general direction and limited supervision, the Fire Captain supports the Deputy Fire Chief in directing and coordinating all Jekyll Island Fire Department personnel activities. The Fire Captain is personally responsible for leading and managing all shift activities, responses, training, and crew actions. In addition, the Fire Captain serves as a department Training Officer. Those responsibilities include working with the other Fire Captains on planning, developing, delivering, and improving the department's training plan according to personnel performance and training mandates.
Description :
- Respond immediately to fire alarms and other emergency calls; lead firefighting operations to protect life, property and restore normalcy using training, skill, and judgment in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Provide strong leadership, guidance, and regular feedback to assigned staff to ensure they have the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to deliver an optimal emergency response and departmental performance aligned with the department's Mission, Vision, and Values. Monitor and measure progress against established goals and outcomes and adapt strategies as necessary to ensure continuous improvement.
- Ensure crew readiness and awareness is at the highest level possible by regularly conducting training and drills tailored to the department's specific needs and challenges.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development among crew members.
- Consistently project a positive public relations image by engaging in community outreach, fostering partnerships with other emergency response agencies, and promoting a culture of professionalism and service.
- Administer comprehensive training programs that are relevant, engaging, and regularly evaluated to ensure continuous improvement and professional development.
- Supervise firefighters operating and maintaining fire stations / equipment and ensure adherence to all JIA / JIFD policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Ensure timely completion and accuracy of all required inspections, records, and reports for all department employees and establish a system of checks and balances to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- This position is a Critical Workforce position for the Jekyll Island Authority. This position is subject to mandatory recall to work before, during, and after a State of Emergency or other situations requiring additional public safety staffing.
- Perform other duties assigned by the supervisors, including special projects, committee assignments, and other tasks critical to the department's success.
