    Jenison Secretarial and Paraprofessional Unit Position

    Instructional/Special Education Assistant for ASD Visually Impaired Student
    Class II – 29.75 hours/week (school year employment to start immediately for training at Bursley Elementary for fall Junior High placement)

    ?Qualifications

    Experience with special needs/behaviorally challenged students preferred:



    Reports to: Building Principal and Assigned Teachers



    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Braille skills or willingness to learn
    • Ability and willingness to work in a collaborative team environment
    • Assist the Teacher Consultant/Visually Impaired and teaching staff with modifications and accommodations to the student’s curriculum
    • Assist the TC/VI in follow-up practice for compensatory skills instruction.
    • Transcribe Braille materials for Regular and Special Education settings
    • Help find and use Braille print materials for educational settings
    • Provide technological (with guidance) support and assistance to student and staff
    • Advocate for student
    • Plan and coordinate in advance with classroom teacher(s) and TC/VI. Have access to lesson plans so materials can be adapted in advance.
    • Maintain appropriate communication among staff under the guidance of the classroom teacher.
    • Assist in ordering, dissemination and return of Braille, Large Type, and Audio Materials and Equipment
    • Facilitate independence in student and provide strategies and reinforcement toward individual potential of student
    • Provide support cues for success in varying environments, presume student competence, encourage student to reach potential, and hold student to high expectations
    • Adapt materials in a variety of ways to provide access to student with Vision Impairments or Blindness
    • Must have advanced computer skills and ability to problem solve student technology issues as they arise (screen reader, Brailler, Refreshable Braille Display, Embosser)
    • Take initiative to learn VI specific technology as needed to further assist student
    • Must be able to manage and coordinate multiple resources used with student
    • Must be willing to implement behavior plan and supports with student under the guidance of the classroom teacher
    • Willing to work with other students in the ASD classroom as needed
    • Professional and positive work skills are critical
    • Regular attendance is an essential function of the position

    Evaluation: Job performance will be evaluated by building principal or designated evaluator.


    Terms of Employment: Number of days, salary or hourly rate of pay and benefits shall be established by the Master Contract and/or the Board of Education.
