Position: Department Head - Math
School Year: 2025-26
Job Summary
Duties and Responsibilities
The department head is responsible to the high school principal. The head should attempt to improve the department
through positive leadership and should serve as a conduit for dialog between the administration and department
members. As determined by the principal, the duties of the department head will include duties and tasks as
necessary including the following.
Improvement of Instruction
The department head is responsible for student assessment analysis and with the input from the department faculty
to develop the department school improvement plan including strategies and activities.
1. The department head should provide departmental leadership during curriculum studies in selecting
educational materials.
2. The department head should keep the principal informed of any departmental concerns as well as
instructional needs.
3. The department head should work with members of the department to keep syllabi and course descriptions
updated.
Department Management
The department head will schedule and conduct department meetings. (one each month)
1. The department head will prepare department meeting agendas with input from the other department
members.
2. The department head will regularly check with department members about their educational concerns.
3. The department head will, after input from the department faculty, submit requisitions for departmental
supplies and equipment.
4. The department head will communicate with the principal concerning the department budget.
5. As requested by the principal, the department head should assist with the orientation of new department
personnel.
6. The department head should recommend the assignment of teachers to courses in the department.
7. The department head should recommend changes in courses after discussion and consensus with the
department members and communication with principal, curriculum director/asst. supt. and/or district
curriculum committee representatives.
8. The department head should attend department head meetings called by the principal (weekly).
9. The department head should aid substitute teachers as necessary if plans and/or materials are unavailable.
Minimum Qualifications
The professional educator MUST possess an Illinois Professional Educator License with the proper endorsement.
