Job Description
Position: Custodian - Head
School Year: 2024-25
Job Summary
The head custodian is responsible for supervising and working with other custodians in their building to keep buildings
and grounds neat and clean at all times; assign tasks and cleaning areas to custodial staff; ensure that all assigned
workspaces are clean and equipment is maintained and in good working condition; train new custodial staff on the
proper use of cleaning techniques and equipment usage; monitor the performance of custodial staff and address any
issues or concerns; assist and ensure building custodians in facility security by locking all doors and gates after use
and at end of work day; assist and ensure the grounds are well maintained; perform routine maintenance and repairs of
buildings, equipment, and grounds; coordinate with maintenance staff for repairs and larger maintenance projects;
coordinate custodial support for special events held in the building; communicate regularly with the building principal
and head of maintenance; and understand and follow safety procedures at all times as provided by the district. The
head custodian will be responsible for approving and assisting other custodians with the completion and submission of
their hours worked in a timely manner and ordering cleaning supplies when needed. Knowledge of workplace
hazardous materials, ability to read labels, following oral and written instructions and competence in operating
machinery are necessary. Candidate attributes include demonstrating leadership, trustworthiness and a good work
ethic. Head custodians will perform other duties as assigned. The head custodian reports to the Principal.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; use hands and fingers to
handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The
employee must frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously
uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and
trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or
move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or
move up to 100 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables,
bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
