Job Description
Reporting to the President and Chief Financial Officer, the Controller's job is to oversee a company's financial health, internal controls, and all accounting-related activities.
The Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board’s Finance & Audit Committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.
The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of approximately $30 million and supervise a team of 2 staff members with functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Controller will ensure timely and effective monthly and annual financial closing, processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and manage other day-to-day inquiries and activities as applicable to the finance function.
The Controller will ensure that JRS/USA has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can best support program operations. In addition, s/he will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, programs, development & fundraising, HR, and IT functions.
Responsibilities
· Accounting: Managing accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and monthly closes.
· Accounting: Preparation and/or review of journal entries, reconciliations, and data imports.
· Audit: Coordinating audit activities and prepare and/or review workpapers.
· Budgeting: Assisting with budget preparation, monitoring variances, and reporting to management and leadership.
· Compliance: Ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP) and applicable funder / donor requirements and other federal & local tax regulations.
· Financial reporting: Preparing interim monthly and annual financial statements, forecasting, and analyzes financial data budget variances.
· Financial strategy: Collaborating with the executive team to guide financial decisions.
· Grants: Oversight of USG award drawdowns and reporting.
· Grants: Oversight of cash disbursements for subawards to Jesuit Refugee Services country offices.
· Risk management: Establishing internal controls to protect assets.
· Staff management: Hiring, training, development, and retention of accounting staff.
· Treasury: Monitoring cash flow and investment performance.
· Treasury: Responding to sanctions queries.
Qualifications
- Personal qualities of integrity, professionalism, reliability, and unwavering commitment to JRS/USA’s mission.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Business Administration required; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience; experience with supporting program implementation in International Non-Governmental organizations (INGOs) preferred.
- Applied knowledge of accounting standards under GAAP applicable to U.S. nonprofit organizations as well as U.S. tax requirements.
- Solid experience coordinating and managing audit activities, financial reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Seasoned experience in managing government, corporate and foundation grants with respect to compliance and reporting.
- Technology savvy with advanced knowledge of robust accounting systems required.
- Experience with Sage Intacct and Salesforce CRM is a plus.
- Experience with financial applications such as expense reimbursement software and payroll software experience is preferred. Experience with Paylocity is a plus.
- Advanced computer skills required: Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint).
- Keen analytical problem-solving skills and solid organizational ability with high attention to details.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to develop key working relationships.
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
Salary Range: $150,000 maximum
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Up to $150,000.00 per year
