As we expand and navigate increasingly complex legal landscapes, we are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Tax Compliance Specialist with a strong legal background to join our team. This role will be crucial to ensuring our continued success while avoiding legal and regulatory issues.

Position Overview: The Tax Compliance Specialist (Paralegal) is a key member of our compliance and legal team, responsible for managing the company's adherence to federal, state, and international tax laws specifically related to the vaping and tobacco industries. This position will require both expertise in tax compliance and the ability to work on legal matters that arise, including handling legal disputes, drafting documents, and working closely with our external legal team. The ideal candidate will have a paralegal background with experience in tax law and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tax Compliance & Strategy:

Monitor and interpret complex state and federal tax laws, regulations, and policies specific to the vaping and tobacco industries, ensuring ongoing compliance.

  • Tax Filing & Documentation:

Prepare, file, and manage required state, federal, and international tax returns in an accurate and timely manner, ensuring all deadlines are met.

  • Risk Management & Assessments:

Conduct comprehensive tax risk assessments to identify potential compliance vulnerabilities or areas of legal exposure. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop corrective action plans where necessary.

  • Legal Liaison & Dispute Management:

Serve as the primary point of contact between the company and external legal teams. Assist in resolving legal disputes, including tax-related legal issues, and ensure that all communication with attorneys and state agencies is handled efficiently.

  • Cross-Department Collaboration:

Work closely with internal teams, including finance, operations, and senior management, to develop and implement effective tax compliance strategies. Provide training and guidance to company personnel to improve awareness of tax regulations and industry-specific legal issues.

  • Compliance Updates & Industry Knowledge:

Stay updated on industry trends, tax law changes, and emerging best practices in tax compliance. Ensure the company remains compliant with evolving regulations at the federal, state, and international levels.

  • Legal Drafting & Document Review:

Draft, review, and file legal documents related to tax compliance, such as agreements, notices, and correspondence with regulatory bodies, under the guidance of the company's legal counsel.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field. A paralegal certification is required.

  • Experience:

A minimum of 4-5 years of experience in tax compliance/legal background, with a focus on complex state and federal tax regulations. Experience in the tobacco or vaping industry is highly preferred.

  • Paralegal Expertise:

Experience working as a paralegal, particularly in tax law or regulatory compliance, with the ability to support legal functions and manage complex legal matters on behalf of the company.

  • In-Depth Knowledge of Tax Law:

Strong understanding of state and federal tax regulations, including sales, excise, and tobacco-specific tax laws. Knowledge of international tax compliance is a plus.

  • Legal & Compliance Skills:

Demonstrated ability to navigate legal issues, draft legal documents, and handle correspondence with external legal counsel and state tax authorities.

  • Strong Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills:

Excellent ability to analyze tax data, identify risks, and propose effective solutions.

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills:

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, external partners, and government agencies.

  • Technical Proficiency:

Proficient in tax software, legal document management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Organizational Skills:

Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment, ensuring that deadlines and compliance requirements are met consistently.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
