Goodman Aquatic Center - Aquatics Director
Summary: Acts as an administrator to oversee the hiring, training, testing, and certification of lifeguard staff. Develops and implements various aquatic programs. Ensures that all appropriate water health and safety standards are maintained.
Pay: $20/hour
Schedule
- Employee will have work hours available (not to exceed 40 hr/month) while the pool is closed (September-May). This time is to be used for hiring guards and staff, arranging training for guards and staff, and additional duties as needed, including engaging in relevant educational experiences. Employee will track and submit hours to payroll.
- Employee will have scheduled work hours (minimum 120 hr/month) while the pool is open June-August, but will also be expected to be on-call whenever the pool is open and available for emergencies. Employee will coordinate with the Site Manager to ensure that one administrator is on-site at all public swim times. As needed, an administrator may use hours for on-site supervision during the camp day. Employee will track and submit hours to payroll. Up to 15 hr/month remain to split between the administrators at their discretion. Should the employee choose to be away for an extended time, the employee must coordinate with the Site Manager to ensure on-site coverage at all public swim times, and acknowledge that minimum monthly hours may not be met.
- Hour limitations and divisions will be reviewed as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees and coordinates the recruitment, training, scheduling, certification, and performance of lifeguard employees of the facility; supervises the day-to-day activities of staff.
- Develops, implements, and oversees a variety of aquatics programs for Camp Shalom and members of the general public.
- Participates in and teaches aquatic and safety certification training sessions, as necessary.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- Certification/Licensure: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification; American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR/AED Certification
- May be working towards fulfilling certificates
- The Jewish Federation of Madison will cover the costs of needed courses, with the commitment of the employee working through the following summer season
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
- Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Ability to enforce safety procedures.
- Knowledge of optimal swimming pool water chemistry, temperature, and cleanliness standards.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and guidelines for the operation of public swimming pools.
- Ability to recruit, train, and certify student lifeguards and others.
- Skills in program planning and development.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
