The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Vocal Music Teacher and Theatrical Music Director for the 2025-2026 school year. Members of the Arts department work collaboratively in designing and delivering an outstanding Arts education to middle and high school students in a supportive, engaging and rich environment which values the whole child.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who is able to infuse a passion for the performing arts within their classroom and the school community as a whole. The ideal candidate has at least three years of teaching experience. Leading candidates have demonstrated success at and enjoy collaborating as an active member of a team, are comfortable teaching in and promoting a pluralistic environment that emphasizes identity development and places importance on the value of community. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is comfortable with and skilled at working with a wide range of learners, has demonstrated success in integrating positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms, and enjoys working with young adolescents. Fluency with technology required.
Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities :
- Teach and direct Middle School Chorus, preparing students for a Winter and Spring Concert, as well as other performances throughout the year;
- Co-direct Shir Madness, the audition-based high school choir;
- Serve as Music Director for the high school musical (Sept through Dec) and middle school musical (January through March), and serve as accompanist and conductor for these performances;
- Teach Middle School Theater classes, if appropriate;
- Accompany students for school assemblies, productions, and programs on the piano as needed;
- Arrange music as needed for small group ensembles;
- Prepare students for vocal or small group solos for assemblies and programs;
- Potentially teach in the middle school advisory program, Intro to Piano courses, or fill other needs;
- Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress;
- Lesson plan, grade, and communicate with students and families regarding student learning;
- Team with colleagues throughout the school to provide interdisciplinary experiences that weave arts education throughout the school curriculum;
- Work collaboratively within the Arts Department and with the Middle and High School teams;
- Other duties as assigned.
