Associate Project Engineer: JGM Engineering Graduate Rotational Program
Developing Future Leaders in Steel Fabrication & Construction
Program Overview:
The JGM Engineering Graduate Rotational Program is an 18-month initiative designed to provide recent engineering graduates with hands-on experience to help launch their careers in industrial construction and structural steel fabrication. Participants will rotate through three key areas within JGM: Estimation, Project Management, and Field Engineering. Each rotation lasts approximately 6 months.
Rotation 1: Estimator (6 Months)
Supervisor: Senior Estimator
Objective: Develop skills in project cost estimation by assisting senior estimators on real-world projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Perform quantity takeoffs for materials and labor
- Use estimation software to develop cost models
- Engage with suppliers and subcontractors for pricing
- Build detailed project cost breakdowns and bids
- Collaborate with sales and project teams
Skills Developed:
- Estimation tools (e.g., Bluebeam, Salesforce, Excel, Tekla EPM)
- Cost management and budgeting
- Risk assessment and bid preparation
- Sales and marketing insight
Outcome: Gain a deep understanding of how cost estimation affects project bids and profitability.
Rotation 2: Project Engineer (6 Months)
Supervisor: Project Manager
Objective: Assist in managing projects from start to finish, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support scheduling and resource planning
- Monitor progress and report on milestones
- Coordinate between design, fabrication, and construction
- Assist with procurement and contract documentation
- Manage budgets, resources, and deliverables
- Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors
- Communicate with clients and stakeholders
- Participate in meetings and site visits
- Document lessons learned
- Embrace feedback for growth
Skills Developed:
- Project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, ERP systems, Excel, ProCore)
- Timeline and resource management
- Communication and team collaboration
- Client management
Outcome:
Develop an understanding of the full project lifecycle and gain the ability to manage project execution.
Rotation 3: Field Engineer (6 Months)
Supervisor: Superintendent
Objective: Gain practical field experience in the assembly and installation of steel structures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform on-site inspections and quality control
- Ensure safety compliance and coordinate with trades
- Troubleshoot technical issues
- Assist with logistics and material coordination
- Implement safety procedures
- Maintain document control
- Participate in safety programs
Skills Developed:
- Field experience in construction and steel installation
- On-site problem-solving and team coordination
- Safety management
- Understanding field requirements for successful execution
Outcome: Learn how field conditions impact project delivery and the importance of communication with the field team.
