Job Description
JOB TITLE: Paraprofessional
CLASSIFICATION: Full time, school-year, non-exempt
SUPERVISES: None
REPORTS TO: Director of Curriculum, Instruction, State, Federal and School
Programs
POSITION SUMMARY:
Paraprofessionals perform a variety of academic support and supervision services to assist in the instruction and development of students to enhance student academic achievement and promote social, psychological, emotional, and intellectual growth, including those at risk or those who may become at risk of performing below grade level. Work cooperatively with Bahweting staff, parents, and the community to enhance the educational experiences and achievements of all enrolled students.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assists teachers in preparing and disseminating instructional materials and units and implementing effective instruction. (Typical activities include small group or individual assistance, organizing materials, etc.)
2. Provide direct assistance to all students in remediation of subject matter such as reading, writing, math, science, computers, language, culture, and other curriculum areas.
3. Assist and supervise students in center based and small group instructional activities.
4. Assist teacher in appropriate record keeping functions such as correcting papers, recording grades and attendance, and organizing homework and take home folders.
5. Keep appropriate records of intervention activities with students.
6. Monitor and carry out behavior plans and interventions as determined by the instructional or social work staff.
7. May provide student supervision prior to and from school, during recess, and lunch periods as assigned. May be assigned bus supervision or after school detention monitoring as needed.
8. Attend in-service training, staff meetings, and professional development activities as assigned.
9. May provide direct assistance, inclusion to students with disabilities as per the child’s
IEP. Typical activities include working 1:1, accommodations/modifications, filling out inclusion log, etc.
10. May work in cooperation with Academic Service teachers to review student responses to interventions.
11. Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical restraint (training provided by the school district).
12. If qualified may be asked to substitute teach if teacher is absent.
13. Other related duties as assigned.

4. Offer appropriate interventions to foster student achievement.
CONTACTS:
Has contact with students, school staff, parents, community, Board members, and intermediate district personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum 60 College/University credits or passing of Work Keys/ETS.
2. Demonstrated ability to provide academic support services to elementary students in core curriculum subject areas.
3. Above average oral and written communication skills.
4. Minimum of one year practical experience working with children preferred.
5. Must have high degree of patience, tolerance and flexibility.
6. Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of situations.
7. Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable laws and school board policies.
8. Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.
9. Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).
10. Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical restraint.
WORKING CONDITIONS/SAFETY HAZARDS:

3. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.

Employment at Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe P.S.A. is on an “at-will” basis and is for no definite period and may, regardless of the date or method of payment of wages or salary, be terminated at any time with or without cause. Other than the superintendent, under the direction of the JKL Board of Directors, no supervisor, manager, or other person, irrespective of title or position, has authority to alter the at-will status of your employment or to enter into any employment contract for a definite period of time with you. Any agreement with you altering your at-will employment status must be in writing and signed by the school superintendent.
JKL is a K-8 Michigan public charter school dedicated to outstanding educational experiences, serving approximately 600 students.
