Job Description
JOB TITLE: School Nurse
CLASSIFICATION: Full time, school-year, non-exempt
SUPERVISES: None
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
Starting Hourly Rate of Pay: LPN $18.63 per hour or RN $27.44 per hour. Rate of pay may be higher based on relative nursing experience.
POSITION SUMMARY:
To assist the district and building administrators in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the school.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist the administration with setting policies and procedures on communicable diseases and/or administrative regulations.
2. Serve as resource/contact person should a communicable disease outbreak occur.
3. Assist with setting up policies and procedures for the use of medications, or self-administration of medications by children during school hours.
4. Assistance with setting up annual health screening for vision and hearing and for Kindergarten Screening & Orientation.
5. Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
6. Assistance with setting up policies and supplies for handling or treating children who become ill during school hours or those who require attention for injuries.
7. Coordinates school programs of immunizations and physical examinations.
8. Serves as a resource person/educator for any health curriculum and family life education.
9. Assists health care provider and principal with health care plans based on medical diagnoses, trains staff in medical intervention (in absence of nurse) related to health care plan.
10. Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
11. Manages the care of a student or staff member who suffered an injury or emergency illness.
12. Reporting to Chippewa County Health Department, Michigan Department of Public Health and Department of Human Services as necessary.
13. Manages the health care needs of students with chronic medical conditions.
14. Performs other related duties, which may be assigned by the District’s administrators.
15. Other related duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
1. Must be punctual and reliable.
2. Must maintain confidentiality in all student/staff/parent contacts, documents and incidents.
CONTACTS:
Has daily contact with School staff, parents, students and community members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
2. Two years nursing experience, public health preferred or related field.
3. Must have excellent organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
4. Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
5. Must relate well to children and exercise patience, tolerance, and mature demeanor in interactions.
6. Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of situations.
7. Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical restraint (training provided by the school district).
8. Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable laws and school board policies.
9. Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.
10. Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).
WORKING CONDITIONS/SAFETY HAZARDS:
1. Responsible for maintaining efficient school operations while working in an often high-stress environment subject to frequent interruptions.
2. Position requires contact with parents who may exhibit anger, confusion, impatience, etc.
3. Interaction with a wide variety of students, including those with special needs.
4. Will have exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
Employment at Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe P.S.A. is on an “at-will” basis and is for no definite period and may, regardless of the date or method of payment of wages or salary, be terminated at any time with or without cause. Other than the superintendent, under the direction of the JKL Board of Directors, no supervisor, manager, or other person, irrespective of title or position, has authority to alter the at-will status of your employment or to enter into any employment contract for a definite period of time with you. Any agreement with you altering your at-will employment status must be in writing and signed by the school superintendent.
