Position Summary
Miller Chemical manufactures and sells high quality adjuvants and specialty fertilizer products to agricultural retailers and distributors across the United States and over 90 countries internationally. Our facility located in Hanover, Pennsylvania is the primary manufacturing and distribution center, which also feeds seven third-party regional distribution centers in the Unites Sates. The Logistics Specialist reports to the Supply Chain Manager and works with many individuals to ensure delivery of domestic and international orders to our customers.
Be the subject matter expert on all matters of logistics and distribution for Miller Chemical, which includes Hazmat shipping. Understand lead times, shipment requirements, and costs. Leverage the capabilities of our distribution network. Work with Customer Service, Sales team, HEM central logistics, and business leadership to ensure customer delivery requirements are being met timely, effectively, and efficiently.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Logistics – Schedule shipments using scheduling program, review carrier performance, help connect carriers with customer locations for delivery appointments. Investigate, validate, and approve carrier charges and invoices using a Transportation Management System (TMS). Understand our outbound shipping capabilities and work with customer service and warehouse team members to give realistic commitments. Act with urgency to support unique and ad-hoc customer expediting needs. Research logistics issues to identify problems and preemptively address them. Resolve carrier issues by working with our central logistics team, transportation solutions team (Sheer Logistics), the TMS system (MercuryGate), and other relevant team members. Maintain and work to ensure master data is accurate within in all warehouses, which includes NMFC classification. Work with a CI mindset to improve processes, procedures, and cost savings in the supply chain.
Third Party Warehousing – Plan and execute the transfer of inventory from the plant to the forward DC’s with input from sales forecast and Regional Sales Managers. Use MRP tools (Oracle) to plan inventory transfers, and coordinate with Production Scheduler to ensure inventory availability. Optimize execution of the supply chain by balancing inventory, supply orders, and scheduled demand. Reconcile inventory in Oracle using cycle counts conducted by the DC’s and conduct other investigations as needed. Own the relationship with the key points of contact at the DC’s and oversee the daily operations of the distribution network to ensure they are meeting KPI’s. Support efforts to disposition and dispose of aged and / or damaged inventory.
Export – Work with HEM central logistics, freight forwarders, and brokers to obtain placement of freight for export. File paperwork with carriers, including special shipping needs, ex : HAZMAT products. Track steamship line schedules and provide updates to Customer Service as cutoff and sailing dates change. Work with local carriers to arrange drayage services.
EFS Reporting – Support corporate reporting of the Error Free Service metric by identifying service failures and assigning root-causes. Attend monthly calls and apply corrective actions to observed trends as needed.
Cross Training – As a member of a smaller operational team, it will be important over time to learn about adjacent team members roles and tasks. This will be useful on occasion to provide support for business-critical requirements during absences and vacations.
Specialized / Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
- 2 years of experience working directly with freight carriers, brokers, forwarders
- Basic understanding of shipping and export processes, documentation, and freight terms
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, & ISO regulations
- HAZMAT certification, or willingness to receive training within first year
- Understanding of MRP systems and planning, experience with Oracle Cloud is a plus
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook (email)
- Positive attitude, exceptional customer service, attention to detail
- Ability to clearly and concisely communication, written and verbal
- Bias toward action and continuous improvement
- CPIM Certification preferred
