Accountant II or III

ACCOUNTANT 

Pay range: $26.00-$31.00/hourly

Location: San Bernardino

DEFINITION:

Under direction, performs complex professional accounting duties requiring preparation and interpretation of financial statements and reports; establishes new accounting procedures and controls; analyzes and advises management on a variety of fiscal matters; performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Accountant III is characterized by the responsibility to act as a financial consultant to management within a department in providing difficult professional financial analysis and fiscal interpretation requiring substantial understanding and application of the principles of cost accounting.

This class is distinguished from Supervising Accountant II by the latter's primary responsibility to supervise a large fiscal section. It is distinguished from the Systems Accountant series which emphasizes the establishment, modification, and evaluation of accounting systems on a County wide basis.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Prepares or verifies a variety of complex accounting, statistical and narrative statements and reports requiring extensive analysis and interpretation of data.

2. Gathers, analyzes and evaluates diverse accounting data; develops trends, forecasts, and projections; based on analysis, makes recommendations on the fiscal operation of a department.

3. Prepares and monitors program budgets and prepares claims that require extensive application of cost accounting.

4. Establishes and maintains complex new departmental accounting systems and procedures and makes recommendations on the implementation of departmental accounting system revisions.

5. Advises management on accounting standards and procedures and on a variety of accounting and budgetary problems.

6. Supervises a small professional, technical or clerical staff involved in the maintenance of an accounting system.

7. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: Three (3) years of professional level accounting experience.

AND

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting OR Bachelor's degree in another field which includes 30 semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in accounting or related field, half of which MUST be upper division. A list of completed college coursework or legible transcripts MUST be submitted with the application if the applicant does not possess a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.

Substitution: An active California Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license may substitute for the education requirements. List your license number under the license/certification section of the application.
