Job Details

We are currently looking for a dynamic and experienced Consulting Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) to join our team. This role is essential to our mission of providing high-quality healthcare services. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and improving clinical documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and facilitate accurate representation of the patient's clinical status. This role requires a high level of interaction with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, so excellent communication skills are essential. The Consulting CDS will also play a crucial role in educating all members of the patient care team on documentation guidelines on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities

• Perform concurrent review of inpatient medical records for proper documentation.
• Facilitate modifications to clinical documentation to accurately reflect patient severity of illness and risk of mortality through interaction with physicians, case management, nursing staff, other patient caregivers, and medical records coding staff.
• Provide education to all members of the healthcare team on documentation opportunities, coding, and reimbursement issues, as well as performance improvement methodologies.
• Develop and implement strategies to support documentation of clinical care and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
• Work collaboratively with the healthcare team to facilitate documentation for severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care.
• Participate in the analysis and trending of statistical data for specified patient populations to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Assist in the development and implementation of action plans for improvement in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Provide expertise in the utilization of electronic health records.
  
  

Qualifications

• Must have a current, valid RN, MD, or AMC license.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Medicine, Health Information Management, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of recent acute care experience, including critical care, medical/surgical, and/or emergency room.
• Previous experience in clinical documentation improvement, case management, and health information management is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of disease pathophysiology and drug utilization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in the area of technical medical terminology.
• Ability to work independently in a time-oriented environment.
• Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
• Proficiency in the use of various computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and electronic health records systems.
• Certification as a Clinical Documentation Specialist is preferred.
