Job Purpose
The Billing Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of medical accounts receivable collections for a physician medical group. This role involves following up on claim denials from assigned insurance payers, resolving billing issues, and addressing inquiries from patients and clinic staff. Utilizing effective collection techniques, the Billing Specialist ensures that accounts receivable remain current, actively monitoring for delinquent payments and taking appropriate actions to resolve outstanding balances.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
Follow up on insurance billing to ensure timely receipt of payments.
Communicate professionally with patients and insurance companies regarding financial matters, working to recover unpaid balances.
Address and resolve patient billing inquiries promptly, initiating adjustments when necessary.
Investigate and take action on zero-payment explanations of benefits, ensuring claims are processed correctly.
Conduct monthly reviews of assigned accounts, identifying and correcting discrepancies.
Provide comprehensive support for account-related inquiries and assist stakeholders as needed.
Research and resolve billing issues in collaboration with relevant parties.
Initiate refund requests for payer or patient overpayments after completing necessary research.
Process debt write-off requests in accordance with policies and regulatory guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of medical billing and/or collections experience in a physician’s office or medical facility.
Must be able to multitask, meet deadlines, and work effectively as part of a team.
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Completion of a recognized billing and coding course preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of government insurance plans (Medicare Part B & C, Medicaid, Tricare, etc.) and commercial insurance (PPO, HMO, EPO, HRA, etc.).
Familiarity with CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding.
Understanding of HIPAA guidelines.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience With EMR Software (eClinicalWorks Preferred But Not Required).
Work Hours & Travel Requirements
Monday – Friday, 8 00 a.m. – 5 00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.
Occasional travel to medical offices may be required for benefit education.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This is an office-based position requiring regular use of standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and scanners.
The role is primarily sedentary but may involve occasional filing, lifting documents, and using a stool to access files.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
