The Department of Biology is seeking an Instructional Services Specialist.
This position will work with faculty and other laboratory coordinators on preparation, including ordering of weekly laboratory materials and equipment for Foundations of Biology, Diversity of Form and Function, and Human Biology laboratories. This position will also include assisting the other laboratory coordinators in the training of teaching assistants (TAs) for each of these courses, development and testing of new laboratory exercises, and revisions of the laboratory manuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Order and maintain supplies and equipment for teaching labs.
- Prepare and test weekly laboratory materials, and equipment, solutions, and media as needed (may require weekend and/or nights).
- Order, maintain and prepare living specimens and animals for laboratory sections.
- Work in collaboration with faculty and other lab coordinators to develop new laboratory exercises or revise/update existing exercises.
- Clean and repair equipment and materials as needed for the laboratory sections.
- Organize scheduling of TAs and lab preparation.

Education Required
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Life Sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated laboratory experience with sterile techniques, preparing solutions, maintaining live specimens and use of standard laboratory equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with faculty, staff, students and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented service and support work environment.
- Must have flexibility in working hours, some early morning/evening and weekend work.
- Ability to move up to 50lbs.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot methods and equipment issues.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in molecular and cell biology, genetics, neurobiology and/or developmental biology.
- Minimum of 1 year working experience with teaching introductory lab courses.
- Minimum of 1 year working experience culturing and breeding Drosophila.
- Working experience with DNA and PCR procedures.
- Minimum of 6 months demonstrated experience working with undergraduates in a teaching environment.
- A Master’s degree in Biology or related discipline.
