University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care is seeking a Nursing Practice Leader (NPL) to support and lead nursing in the Behavioral Health Sciences Division.
Position Summary:
The Nursing Practice Leader for the Behavioral Health Services divisions functions as a change agent for the behavioral health patient population by incorporating the roles of clinical specialist, educator, consultant, practitioner, researcher, and administrator as indicated to support and enhance patient care. Provide leadership and supervision for BHS by coordinating staff orientation and annual competencies. Collaborates with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care. Serves in a consultative resource capacity to staff by providing expert knowledge and role modeling behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
Provide Leadership and Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population
o Lead nursing practice and patient care at the meso/macro system level (i.e. service line, division or department level).
o Provide leadership for nursing practice or service line(s) based on systematic evaluation, evidence-based practice and research.
o Assure standard of care delivery and competency of staff across the units and services (macro level).
o May oversee specialized patient care services (Macro level).
Specialized Services for Nursing Care
o Support the conduct of research and translate findings from evidence-based research into clinical practice.
o Lead evaluation and implementation of clinical technologies that support patient care.
Provide Education
o Provide expert specialty-level education to healthcare staff, patients, students or residents.
o Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education
o Utilize expert knowledge and skill of compliance standards.
o Lead development and implementation of procedures and share responsibility for Quality Improvement (QI) plan with appropriate nursing leaders.
Human Resource Management
o Use expert knowledge to supervise care delivery of nursing staff, students or residents, providing evaluative feedback and recommendations regarding performance. Hire, develops, and manages the performance of staff and assures compliance with UI policies and procedures.

Education Requirements:
- Master’s or Doctorate Degree in Nursing required. If Master’s degree is in a related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
Experience Requirements:
- 3 years of clinical nursing experience including a minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting.
- Previous Behavioral Health Experience
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite of products (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint)
- Demonstrates skills for leading change and implementation of evidence-based practice.
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication.
- Demonstrates skills in leadership/management roles.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills.
- Proficient in computer software applications.
Desired Qualifications:
- Professional certification in relevant leadership or clinical specialty, if not certified will obtain within the 1st year
- Clinical practice experience at University of Iowa Health Care.
- Experience using Epic in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
- 1-3 years of experience contributing to a clinical information system implementation cycle through areas such as design, workflow analysis, building, training, implantation, and support in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
- Ability to assess learning needs and match to the most effective education methods.
- Experience authoring training materials and leading training sessions in a variety of formats.
- Member/involvement in professional organizations
