This position supports the primary mission of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science – Biomedical Informatics Core. This role is mainly responsible for providing data solutions to grant and research programs. It oversees various specialized services, including data management, databases, ETL/BI, Master Data Management (MDM), and data analysis. The Senior Database Architect also manages a team of database analysts, DBAs, and ETL/BI developers, working with specialized biomedical data to support the Institute's mission.
Duties to include but not limited to:
· Lead the architecture, data modeling, ETL/BI (Extract Transform and Load/Business Intelligence) design, development, and implementation for biomedical research tools such as enterprise data warehouse for research (EDW4R) and datamart(s).
· Consults with colleagues and research community to define data architecture requirements, identify needs and verify preliminary design and output of a limited scope.
· Collaborate to lead ongoing development of the enterprise data warehouse for research (EDW4R), an aggregated data structure including patient data and various key extant data sources.
· Architect, design, and develop large-scale (enterprise) data warehouse components. Coordinate all aspects of database application development. Make strategic database application decisions.
· Contribute to the development and management of the ICTS Biomedical Data Request service, which provides researchers with secure and compliant extractions of data from clinical databases including patient medical records and billing.
· Facilitate and coordinate logical and physical databases for highly available and/or complex integrated solutions. Evaluate potential database environment solutions.
· Collaborate and define a vision for moving beyond custom data extraction, migration and management services into a more automated project-specific model that could be replicated across multiple research studies.
· Plan and coordinate multiple database environments including on premise and cloud strategies.
· Serve as technical go-to expert or functional lead; foresee technological change and develop technology roadmaps. Lead project teams.
· Demonstrated ability to lead a team in developing effective solutions and making informed decisions.

About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science or management information systems and experience in application development is required. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also meet these minimum requirements.
- A minimum of 10 years using Microsoft SQL Server or other relational database systems to design database driven applications.
- Experience in developing and designing data strategies for data extraction, integration and implementation of systems, data warehouse and data marts.
- Experience working in a healthcare and or academic research environment.
- Familiarity with Java, .net, ruby, or Python programming language(s).
- Familiarity with web development and proficient writing in HTML5, CSS, and javascript for multiple web browsers on multiple platforms.
- Familiarity with web application configuration.
- Ability to work independently and with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication skills and extensive experience working directly with customers.
- Experience managing application development and database management staff.
- Knowledge and experience with project management and software development methodologies.
- Supervisory experience (3 years).
- Proven verbal and written communication skills. Expertise in presenting technical concepts to non-technical staff.
- Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.
- Experience working in an academic health care environment.
- Experience supporting clinical and translational research.
- Experience with healthcare systems like Epic, GE-IDX, and Cerner.
- Experience developing data models for academic research.
- Experience with data modeling for common clinical and research data models such as Clarity, PCORNet and OMOP.
- Training in health science domain.
- Ability to facilitate, and moderate discussions with stakeholders for decision-making.
- A master’s degree in informatics, computer science, engineering, information science or related field is desirable.
