What are the responsibilities and job description for the Guidance, Navigation, and Control Engineer position at Joby Barnard?
Overview
This position involves developing, testing, and deploying algorithms for the guidance, navigation, and control of an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. The unprecedented control authority and long-range capability of our aircraft pose unexplored GNC problems that require novel and challenging solutions. The engineer will play a key role on a fast-moving team in providing input to conceptual system architectural design and implementation of embedded software to ensure the safety of our electric-powered, fly-by-wire aircraft.
Responsibilities
- Achieving desirable handling qualities, disturbance rejection, aerodynamic performance, mitigating vibration and structural load considerations.
- Analyze dynamical systems to understand flight physics in a novel aircraft configuration and develop frameworks and tools to quantify stability margin, handling qualities, control authority, and mission-critical concerns across all flight phases.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including Loads, Performance, Rotor Dynamics, Powertrain, and System Safety teams.
- Work closely with test pilots to define handling and flying characteristics, participate in mission planning and scenario simulations, and provide support during flight test activities.
