Description:
The Retail Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of John A Logan College retail establishments, which includes The General Store and any pop-up locations set up for events, on or off campus, ensuring a positive shopping experience for students, faculty, staff, and community visitors. The main objective will be to ensure that the store runs smoothly and efficiently while providing excellent customer service. The manager will drive sales, manage staff, and maintain inventory, all while creating a vibrant atmosphere that aligns with the college’s values and culture.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean and organized store environment, including visual merchandising and product displays
- Lead and motivate a team of sales associates to achieve sales targets and provide excellent customer service
- Manage inventory levels and ensure that the store is well-stocked at all times
- Establish and maintain relationships with publishers, vendors, faculty, staff, and students to assure the best possible student success
- Analyze sales data and develop strategies to increase sales and improve profitability
- Manage expenses effectively to ensure that the store operates within budget
- Design and manage systems for functions unique to community colleges and to John A. Logan College in particular, such as course kit development, box office services, etc.
- Handle customer inquiries and complaints
Working Conditions:
- This position may require evening and weekend hours, especially during peak seasons such as back-to-school and exam periods
- The Retail Manager will work in a fast-paced environment, dealing with a diverse range of customers
Education & Experience Requirements
Education required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Retail Management, or a related field, or 5 years of progressive retail management experience
Experience required:
- Proven experience in retail management or a similar role, preferably in a college environment
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate a diverse team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with visual merchandising and product displays
- Experience with retail point of sale and inventory management software
Experience preferred:
- 3 years of experience in retail management
- Proficiency in retail management software and point-of-sale systems
- Experience with budget management and financial management
Essential Functions & Position Duties
- Operational Management:
– Oversee daily retail operations, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
– Oversee deliveries and distributions of student orders from the College’s online bookstore.
– Develop and implement strategies to enhance customer satisfaction and drive sales growth.
– Monitor and manage inventory levels, ensuring adequate stock of merchandise.
- Staff Leadership:
– Recruit, train, and supervise retail staff, fostering a collaborative and motivated team environment.
– Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff for improvement.
– Schedule staff shifts effectively to ensure optimal coverage during peak hours.
- Financial Oversight:
– Assist in the preparation of budgets, tracking expenses and revenues to achieve financial targets.
– Analyze sales reports to identify trends and areas for improvement.
– Implement promotional strategies to increase sales and attract customers.
- Customer Engagement:
– Develop strong relationships with customers, addressing their needs and feedback.
– Organize events and promotions that resonate with the college community.
– Create a welcoming and inclusive shopping environment that reflects the diversity of the campus.
- Collaboration:
– Work closely with college administration, student organizations, and other departments to align retail offerings with campus activities and events.
– Stay updated on campus trends and student preferences to adjust inventory and services accordingly.
Non-Essential functions of the position
Other duties as assigned. Duties must be performed on the John A. Logan College campus or designated location.

Salary Range: $55,000 – $57,000
