What are the responsibilities and job description for the ASL PreK Program Assistant position at John F Kennedy?
The Winooski School District is seeking a Preschool Program Assistant who is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) to work with a student in our preschool classroom for the remainder of the FY25 school year. This instructional assistant would be responsible for assisting in all aspects of the daily, instructional program for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Ideally this person would be available to work two weeks during July and then full-time in the fall potentially in a kindergarten classroom.
Other responsibilities may include providing support to student(s) regarding emotional regulation, academics, and social skills, assisting with data collection, progress monitoring, and/or bus duties,
The Winooski School District is a PreK through 12 system that is housed in one educational center. Employee must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job
Other additional duties may include but are not limited to recess, lunch and bus support.
There are physical requirements for these positions.
QUALIFICATIONS –
Ability to collaborate with teachers and providers
General knowledge of expressive and receptive sign language skills
Proficient in child’s language/communication mode such as; American Sign Language.
Become and remain well-versed in the ASL education course materials in order to demonstrate competency.
Be informed, monitor, and report to the special educator when/if concerns arise about the student’s attention, comprehension, general academic progress, and accommodations/modifications
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents/guardians, and school staff;
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Education:
Completed at least 2 years of study (defined as a minimum of 48 credit hours) at an institution of higher education; or
Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or
Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment:
Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, mathematics.
Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
This candidate must be a team player who enjoys working with preschool students, and has good classroom management skills.
This a 35 hour per week/School Year position.
