Job Summary :
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides assistance to individuals with disabilities, supporting them in achieving maximum independence and participation in daily life. The DSP fosters an environment of safety, independence, and community integration through personalized care, support, and teaching, allowing individuals to engage in activities like personal care, socialization, and community involvement.
Key Responsibilities :
Habilitation & Care : Assist with daily living tasks (e.g., bathing, eating, personal hygiene) while promoting independence. Follow individual plans and provide support for personal care, nutrition, and behavioral goals.
Communication : Interact respectfully with individuals, families, coworkers, and the community, adjusting communication styles as needed. Ensure active participation in conversations.
Organization & Safety : Prioritize tasks, maintain a clean environment, and ensure safety protocols are followed. Participate in safety programs and assist with facility upkeep.
Behavioral Support : Follow behavior plans, collect data, and assist in managing behaviors using prescribed interventions.
Community Engagement : Support individuals in social, recreational, and volunteer activities to promote community integration.
Medical & Health Support : Assist with medical and personal care needs, administer medications, and monitor health conditions. Accompany individuals to appointments as needed.
Teamwork & Training : Work cooperatively with the team, attend required trainings, and stay informed on program needs. Provide feedback and foster a supportive team environment.
Compliance & Reporting : Ensure compliance with policies, including confidentiality, safety, and reporting of any abuse or neglect.
Transportation & Scheduling : Assist with transportation, and ensure timely attendance and flexible scheduling.
Qualifications :
Education : High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience : Experience in human services preferred, but not required.
Skills : Familiarity with social work terms, ability to use basic software, and a valid driver’s license preferred.
Environment and Physical Demands : The DSP is responsible for numerous tasks; daily work activity is conducted both indoor and outdoor environments. Physical activity includes assisting or lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, transferring, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing / pulling, reaching, handling and using cleaning products and disinfectants. Must participate in behavioral restraints using approved techniques and JFM procedures.
The role requires physical activity and occasional emergency responses, with the potential for overtime and flexible hours based on program needs.
