Sr. Statistical Programmer Analyst

We are looking for an exceptional Sr. Statistical Programmer Analyst (Sr. Programmer Analyst) who is interested in collaborating on research in the Johns Hopkins Center for Mental Health and Addiction Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). The programmer will be focused on a variety of research projects focused on policy and health services for populations with substance use and mental health conditions. This position is supported by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute of Mental Health. The position will involve analysis of Medicaid and Medicare claims and encounters data, including implementing code to identify cohorts meeting study inclusion criteria, constructing variables, building datasets, and conducting statistical modeling. The programmer will work closely with a team that has expertise in causal inference using observational data so will employ these methods in the statistical modeling work.

The effective candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, a self-starter, and good at working both collaboratively and independently. The successful candidate will have prior work experience analyzing large datasets and familiarity with health insurance claims data. Interests in the health of marginalized and disadvantaged populations is a plus.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership around data curation and analysis task in a highly flexible, dynamic team environment.
  • Perform data intake and cleaning tasks on large administrative datasets (e.g., insurance claims).
  • Ensure compliance with human subjects and data security protocols.
  • Use advanced statistical and programming software (e.g., SAS, Stata, SQL, R, Python) to conduct exploratory and hypothesis-driven data analysis.
  • Solve complex data problems using appropriate methodologies for analyses (e.g., advanced regression modeling, econometrics).
  • Create data visualizations and tables.
  • Engage in ongoing meetings with research partners.
  • Participate in the development, submission, and publication of study manuscripts.
  • Support the mentorship of junior data analyst colleagues.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience.
  • Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Public Health, or a related field preferred.
