Position Summary:

This individual is responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of the maintenance department for Volpi’s St. Louis site. This includes setting and assigning daily work priorities, managing all preventive maintenance programs, and troubleshooting and repairing the equipment, facilities and other general maintenance requirements. This position reports to the Director of Manufacturing and is on-site.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that all facilities and equipment are in good operating condition.
  • Promotes safe, efficient operations, while maintaining compliance with all local, county, state, and Federal codes.
  • Works with all Production Managers to monitor and maintain coolers, freezers, fermenting rooms, and drying rooms, keeping all at the optimal level of performance through preventive maintenance and quality repairs.
  • Ensures equipment, machinery, and tools used throughout all production and processing areas are in good repair and perform the expected work reliably.
  • Identifies, defines and implements process and project improvements that lead to capacity increases, cost reduction, safety and ergonomic improvements and quality improvements.
  • Oversees budgets, timelines, and contractors. Accountable for Operating Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) improvements.
  • Develops and owns a maintenance budget based on current plant needs and future projections. Requests and assembles contract bids and submits for approval.
  • Manages appropriate part inventories, balancing downtime costs with investment costs.
  • Oversees preventive maintenance programs, minimizing downtime and product quality defects.
  • Maintains records of repairs and critical maintenance activities for product quality purposes, ensuring problems are resolved.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of plant improvements and expansions suggestions to workflows, room layout, and throughput capacities and/or carry out projects that improve efficiency and/or reduce operating costs.
  • Synchronizes work order priorities, working with the operations team to coordinate repairs, ensuring they comply with safety and quality guidelines.
  • Maintains building plans, blueprints, and drawings.
  • Leads maintenance team staff and delegates work responsibilities with appropriate priorities.
  • Responsible for the skill assessment and development of the technical workforce.
  • Ensures compliance to SQF and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as the site safety coordinator, managing programs such as LOTO, wastewater compliance, etc.


Candidate Qualifications:

  • Minimum two-year college degree required in a technical field, with a Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Must have a basic knowledge of SQF, OSHA and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Prior maintenance experience is required, preferably in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with plant utilities, facilities, HVAC, HFFS equipment, slicing equipment, and/or grinding/stuffing equipment.
  • Must demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to solve problems on the go.
  • Must possess good communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in other languages is considered a plus.
  • Must possess a “service oriented” mindset, with the ability to manage multiple customers, projects and priorities at one time.
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively in a busy, fast-growing, team setting.
  • Computer proficiency is essential, especially in Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, results-driven, self-starter that embraces individual accountability.
