What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator of Counseling Services position at John Wood Community College?
This is a full-time, 10-month, exempt position that reports to the Director of Campus Care and is located on JWCC's main campus in Quincy, Illinois. Position begins immediately.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Coordinator of Counseling Services provides short-term, individual/group counseling and outreach for John Wood Community College students who are experiencing a wide range of personal/emotional and mental health issues; and keeps appropriate documentation and student records accordingly. This position applies graduate-level clinical counseling skills to the John Wood student body and refers to external sites as necessary. In addition, this position works closely with faculty and staff to identify students in need of such services. The Coordinator of Counseling Services will participate in college-wide committee service, where assigned, as well as serve as a member of the College's Campus Care team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide short-term personal counseling and crisis intervention for students.
- Assess student needs and provide appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
- Develop and implement proactive programming to support student mental health and well-being.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and support students facing personal and academic challenges.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records in compliance with ethical and legal guidelines.
- Coordinate outreach initiatives, including workshops and presentations on mental health topics.
- Serve as a key resource for faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and best practices in college counseling.
- Develop partnerships with community agencies to enhance counseling services.
- Collaborate with the Campus Care team to assist students with the navigation, allocation, and acquisition of resources both at JWCC and across community partnerships.
- Participate in student success initiatives and committees as needed.
- Be knowledgeable and stay up to date on internal/external resources to enhance student well-being, academic success, and the campus experience.
- Provide education and awareness to the campus community on resources available to students.
- Provide Mental Health awareness and education to recognize warning signs and symptoms of those dealing with personal issues.

- Respond to emergency/crisis situations.
- Maintain and review departmental policies and procedures as well as contribute to institutional and state compliance guidelines.
- Serve on the college Behavioral Intervention Team as well as other college committees/projects where appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Licensed or license-eligible in Illinois as a professional counselor (LPC, LCPC, LSW, LCSW) or equivalent.
- Experience providing counseling services in an educational or similar setting preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Maintain knowledge of working with multi-cultural populations, empathy, a commitment to student advocacy and empowerment, and possess the ability to apply a culturally sensitive approach to helping students.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills, a high level of organization, a strong sense of confidentiality, and maintain compliance with the ACA code of ethics.
- Knowledge of mental health issues affecting college students.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality.
- Experience developing and implementing mental health programs and initiatives.
- Proficiency in case management and referral processes.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel for recruitment events and community outreach.
- Work in well-lit, ventilated office spaces, as well as across campus.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift, and move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and interaction with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Flexibility to work beyond regular hours, including weekends and holidays, when necessary.
- Participation in ongoing professional development to stay informed about trends in the field.
- Ability to manage the mental and emotional demands of the role.
Work Schedule:
- 10-month position that works from August 1st - May 31st of each academic year.
- Full-time position with a typical schedule of Monday-Thursday (8am - 5pm) and Friday (8am - 12pm).
- Flexibility to work beyond regular hours, including weekends and holidays, when necessary.
SALARY:
- This is an exempt position with an estimated annual salary range of $47,500.00 - $55,835.00.
