Are you a leader in planetary sample analysis with strong programs of research?

 

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

 

APL is seeking an experienced scientist to lead research related to extraterrestrial sample analysis. You will be joining an active group of sample researchers using a variety of techniques from laboratory experiments, modeling, and data analysis to understand the origin and evolution of samples and their parent bodies. You will develop new avenues of sample science research that complement existing expertise. You will provide leadership for future in situ investigations and/or sample return missions. You will be expected to establish and conduct independent research utilizing existing facilities at APL, Johns Hopkins University, and/or other nearby institutions. Opportunities also exist to identify and request new facilities at APL. 

 

The successful candidate will join APL’s Moon and Rocky Planets Group, a roughly 30-person group within the more than 1300 scientists, engineers, and staff that make up the Space Exploration Sector. We are a highly collaborative, supportive, and innovative group that has a strong foundation of lunar and planetary science expertise. Opportunities exist to build on APL’s existing leadership roles in lunar and planetary science, our close association with world-class instrument engineers, and our groundbreaking capabilities for innovative spacecraft missions. The group runs state-of-the-art research laboratories and supports numerous active and planned missions throughout the solar system.

 

As a senior staff sample scientist at APL, your job will include:

  • Performing cutting-edge science analyzing extraterrestrial samples
  • Formulating new and innovative research directions, and proposing them to the appropriate funding agencies
  • Contributing to the group and lab strategic efforts
  • Working with partners at other local institutions to strengthen collaborations related to sample analysis?
  • Working with instrumentation and spacecraft engineers to define requirements for orbital or in situ missions

 


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Ph.D. in a field related to planetary science
  • Have 5 years of experience in scientific analysis of extraterrestrial samples
  • Excel working in a team environment to conduct scientific research
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrated through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • 8 years of experience in scientific analysis of extraterrestrial samples
  • Played a coordination or leadership role on science research projects
  • Won competitively selected research grants
  • Demonstrated an ability to win competitively selected sample allocations

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

$90,000 Annually

Maximum Rate

$350,000 Annually
