The On-Call chaplain is responsible for provision of pastoral care to patients, families and staff during the evening, night, holidays, and weekend shifts.
II. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to requests for emergency Pastoral Care. Responds by telephone to paging operator within 5-10 minutes. Available on unit within 30 minutes after initial request.
- Provides chaplaincy services on request, including bedside visits, spiritual guidance, administration of sacraments, pastoral counseling to patients families, and staff as needed, including emergency or crisis situations, covering all areas of the hospital.
- Keeps up-to-date information regarding calls made and people visited as required by hospital regulations. Provides, by e-mail, daily reports of activities undertaken in this post.
- Keeps current regarding theology and pastoral care through related literature and educational programs (i.e. at least 1 workshop)
- Provides Spiritual support for staff as needed.
III. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Theology or a related field. A Master’s degree from an accredited seminary (AATS) and 3 years of previous ministry experience is preferred. Also requires completion of one-semester of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training.
- Ecclesiastical endorsement by a recognized religious conference/synod required.
- Work requires the analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experience-based knowledge.
- Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
- Candidate must be ordained and able to administer sacraments in his/her religious denomination.
- Will be expected to attend hospital and departmental orientation prior to commencing work as well as departmental professional discussion annually.
