Position Summary:
Responsible for the timely, courteous, and competent transportation of patients throughout the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Outpatient Center, primarily via wheelchair or stretcher. Receives assignments for specific trips and associated tasks from Supervisor and Customer Service Representatives. Delivers and retrieves transport equipment throughout the campus area, as directed. Participates in maintenance and minor repair work on wheelchairs and stretchers. Accepts additional assignments related to support functions needed to provide service excellence to internal and external customers.
Expectations of staff who are certified in Basic Life Support/C.P.R. would be consistent with other non-clinical staff certified in Basic Life Support/C.P.R. within the organization: recognize patients in distress, call for help, and render C.P.R./Basic Life Support as appropriate until clinical team/providers arrive on the scene. Staff would be expected only to provide care up to the level of training that they have received.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or a G.E.D. Certificate
Required Work Experience:
A minimum of one to three months of experience in a healthcare setting, especially in a role that interacts with patients, is preferred. Verifiable patient transport experience is highly desirable.
Licensure/Certification:
Current basic cardiac life support (C.P.R.) is required. Certification as Healthcare Transporter is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of patient transport and age-specific interactions.
Ability to read and write information regarding trip assignments and to confirm patient identification.
Customer service core competencies for the ability to deal directly with patients, their families, and J.H.M. customers.
Ability to read and comprehend policies and procedures.
Able to work independently.
The ability to interact positively with team members to carry out responsibilities and to take direction and assignments is critical.
It is critical to determine the status of patient transport equipment to ensure that it is in safe working condition.
Timely communication of appropriate information regarding delays, trip completions, etc., is essential to enhance productivity.
