Role Opportunity:
The Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer (VP/CNO) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is responsible for ensuring the delivery of optimal patient care through the coordination of nursing and patient care services, maintenance of quality assurance standards, and the appropriate allocation and management of nursing resources. In addition, the VP/CNO is responsible for respiratory therapy and the capacity and throughput of the hospital. The VP/ CNO is an essential member of the executive team.


Reporting Relationships:
The Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer (VP/CNO) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center reports to the President of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and SVP/CNO of Johns Hopkins Health System.


Essential Functions:


Planning – Develops a specific course of action to achieve the defined and agreed upon objectives that create a positive image of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, meet strategic initiatives, and fulfill the mission of the hospital.
Departmental and Organizational Support – Establishes the structure and processes; assembles the resources required for executing plans.

  • Assembles and establishes resources that lead to the effective and economical accomplishment of business and clinical objectives.
  • Develops and maintains a governance structure with operating procedures and staffing to meet the needs of the organization, the department of nursing and all patient care service departments.

Controlling – Measures, interprets, and evaluates actions and results for conformance to plans and policies.

  • Establishes standards of care and practice for the department of nursing and all patient care service departments in collaboration with the directors.
  • Assures that standards of care and practice guide the provision of patient care services while providing direction for the department of nursing/patient care services congruent with professional practice and the hospital mission.

Climate Setting and Leadership – Ensuring, through demonstration, that the goals and actions of the organization are consistent with the values and mission of the organization.

  • Establishes timely and effective communication to ensure that all nursing and patient care services areas receive adequate information on internal and external items which affect their operations as well as advice, assistance, and service to aid them in attaining corporate and departmental objectives.
  • Develops positive employee relations and communication through management interaction with employee groups.

Operational/Technical – Relating to the specific operational responsibilities of the hospital.

  • Through the appropriate quality assurance/performance improvement mechanisms, evaluates, develops, and maintains an institutional program for continuous quality service improvement.
  • Reviews and approves policies and procedures, plans, and activities to ensure that they are supportive of the highest achievable level of care. Provides coordination of plans that cross departmental boundaries to ensure the appropriate level of interdisciplinary quality assurance/performance improvement activities.

Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or related field required upon hire.
  • Earned doctorate in nursing is required at the time of hire OR able to obtain within an agreed-upon timeline
  • Advanced administrative skills at a level generally acquired through fifteen years of progressively responsible nursing administration experience in university teaching hospitals.
  • Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Maryland or able to acquire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of nursing theory and practice, organizational management, finance, and administration.
  • Knowledge of current health care environment.
  • Expert verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership and collaboration within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Negotiation skills necessary to resolve issues in a manner which is consistent with organizational objectives.
  • Ability to analyze data and synthesize information for the purpose of problem-solving and decision-making.

Salary Range: Minimum $320,000 - Maximum $350,000. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
