Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Women’s Basketball Coach, provides day-to-day oversight of administrative and operational functions for the women’s basketball program. The head women’s coach will assist in the administration and leadership of the Johnson C. Smith University’s DII women’s basketball program. Responsibilities includes but are not limited to: providing coaching and instruction, recruiting, facilitation of player development, scouting, preparation of practice activities and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. The Head Women’s Basketball Coach will be responsible for cultivating highly competitive programs within the CIAA, NCAA and Johnson C. Smith University’s policies, procedures, and expectations.

Lead a highly competitive women’s basketball program by adhering to university, CIAA and NCAA policies and regulations.


Develop and implement an annual operating plan as well as strategic plans to include: recruitment, fundraising, and academics.


Prepare the annual operating budget and monitor the budget on a monthly and quarterly basis.

Ensure the appropriate preparation of financial expenditure requests and approve all expenditure requests related to the program; coordinate all logistical requirements for team travel.


Manage the day to day operations of Basketball office.


Coordinate all facility scheduling including but not limited to meetings, competitions, practice, and clinics

Plan and direct basketball camps and clinics, including communication, outreach, recruitment.


Establish and maintain a positive team culture.


Design, monitor and support student-athletes’ personal development programs and progress with respect to their athletic and community citizenship.


Monitor and support student-athlete’s academic progress in conjunction with available programs and resources.


Monitor coaching staff and evaluate staff performances to ensure their compliance with all team, departmental, university, CIAA and NCAA policies, rules and regulations.


Develop and enhance the program’s competitive schedule. Develop practice schedules, teach fundamental skills and properly train and condition student athletes in preparation for contests.


Orient and educate student-athletes about respect to the team, department, university and CIAA; develop team standards and expectations, policies, procedures and regulations.


Attend instructional clinics to remain up to date in coaching skills and methodology.


The Head Women’s Basketball Coach will manage and coordinates team activities.


The individual will be responsible for assigning duties and responsibilities to assistant coaches.


Maintain knowledge of NCAA, CIAA, and Johnson C. Smith University transfer rules and regulations.


Oversees individual workouts in and out of season; player development; skill development, speed and agility.


Supervise athletes at all times from the time practice or activity starts until it is over.


Monitors, assists, and nurtures student-athletes’ academic progress toward graduation at the college and assists with placement at four-year colleges and universities.


Assist with game day preparation and practice schedules, assist with weekly scouting reports organizes game day locker room.


Organizes and monitors recruitment for program, maintains and oversees all necessary compliance paperwork from staff for off campus recruiting, unofficial/official visits, and compliance assistant updates.


Recruit and maintain specific roster sizes for the women’s basketball program; recruit student-athletes and complete necessary compliance paperwork with regards to recruiting.


Manage travel and lodging logistics for official visits and student-athlete host.


Coordinate community service activities.


Coordinate the issuance, care and inventory of equipment, supplies, and uniforms; purchase equipment, supplies and uniforms.


Coordinate the security of all facilities used by the team and coaching staff.


Submit certified rosters, award forms, season records, inventory forms, transportations requests, travel authorization requests, travel expense reports, requisitions and other forms required by the Athletic director.


Ensure the proper completions of physical examinations forms relating to the examinations and to coordinate injuries with the training staff.


Attend athletic department meetings.


Show respect for officials, press, opposing coaches, visiting teams, parents, fans, students, athletes, fellow coaches, and faculty and staff.

Communicate skillfully with colleagues, subordinates, and student-athletes.


Maintains self-control and sets an example for sportsmanlike conduct in relationships with team.


Provide clear direction of responsibility and authority.


Schedule meetings, practices and other team functions.

Serve as liaison between basketball office and other offices in the Athletic Department (Academic Services, Facilities, Business, IT, Athletic Communications, etc.).

Ensure program/project mission, values, guidelines, policies & procedures are implemented &maintained.

Ensure technology systems are properly installed & maintained.

Implement strategy regarding structure, process, & staff support of students in compliance with JCSU policies.

Coordinate pre-season housing and meal arrangements and serve as liaison with the campus constituents.

Coordinate basketball camps and clinics, including communication, outreach, recruitment.

Incorporate social media and networking into program aspects as appropriate.

Strengthen partnerships with external resources by defining, promoting and marketing benefits of participation and involvement to the organization. Create and nurture relationships with organizations to develop a network of enthusiastic organizations engaged via active participation in the success of program.

Ensure that event details including communication, venues, presenters, travel arrangements, materials, refreshments and technology are arranged and completed in an appropriate and timely manner.

Supervise part-time temporary help, including work-study students and team managers.

Attend CPR and other safety classes arranged by Athletics and receive certificate.


Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in sports, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred. Minimum of three years of experience as a head or associate coach at the collegiate level. Must demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, and word. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also required. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds is an essential skill. Must be able to prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to recruit student-athletes at the NCAA/Collegiate level with potential for academic and athletic success is essential. Proficiency with NCAA and CIAA policies, NCAA Compliance Assistant, Eligibility Center, as well as NCAA Transfer and Bylaws. Familiarity with Front Rush or related recruiting systems is also preferred. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

Health Insurance Plans
The University offers two PPO Plans, one being a High Deductible Health Plan that are administrated by Healthgram and utilizes the Great West Health (GWH)-Cigna PPO network. A Wellness Premium discount is available to those that participate. A full vision benefit is included. Health insurance coverage becomes effective on the 61st day of employment.

Dental Insurance
The University offers dental coverage through Delta Dental of North Carolina. This coverage takes effect on the first day of the month following 60 days of continuous employment.

Life Insurance
The University provides a group term life insurance policy through The Standard with a value of one times the annual salary. This coverage takes effect on the first day of the month following 60 days of continuous employment.

Long-term Disability Insurance
The University provides each full-time employee with group long-term disability insurance through The Standard. This coverage takes effect on the first day of the month following 60 days of continuous employment.

Supplemental Policies
Supplemental life insurance and short-term disability, accident and cancer policies are available through Colonial and Aflac. Premiums for these individual policies may be paid through payroll deduction.

Retirement
To assist faculty and staff to plan for their retirement, Johnson C. Smith University provides a 403 (b) retirement plan utilizing TIAA that allows for supplemental and matching contributions. Enrollment in this plan is not automatic. Employees may elect a percentage towards supplemental contributions immediately. Eligible employees are required to contribute in order to receive the University’s match after 1 year of service. The University will match contributions on a dollar for dollar basis up to a maximum of 5% for eligible employees.

Sick Leave
Faculty and non-academic personnel accrue one paid day of sick leave for each month of employment the calendar year. Accrued but unused sick leave may be accumulated and carried over from year to year, up to a maximum of 60 days. Sick leave may be taken for the employee’s personal illness, medical appointments or the illness of a parent, child or spouse.

Vacation Leave
Non-academic personnel earn one paid day of vacation leave for each month of employment during the calendar year. Administrative Officers and Non-academic personnel may accrue a maximum of 20 vacation leave days.

Bereavement Leave
Non-academic personnel will be granted up to three days of bereavement leave for the death of an immediate family member.

Other Leaves of Absence & Holidays
Other leaves of absence including sabbaticals, leave for military and jury duty, educational and Family/Medical Leave are available for eligible employees. The University is closed in observance of 13 holidays.

Tuition Remission
Full-time employees who have completed six months of continuous service are eligible to enroll in a maximum of three semester hours at Johnson C. Smith University and will receive a discount of one-half of the tuition cost. If an employee qualifies for tuition remission, the dependent children of that employee may also receive the tuition discount for up to 18 credit hours. Through the Council of Independent Colleges Consortium employees and their dependents may also be eligible for a full tuition waiver at one of over one hundred participating consortium schools.

HealthPlex and Wellness Programs
The grant-funded facility is available to all employees during the hours of operation and a coordinator is on duty to train employees to properly operate the equipment and get the most out of their workout routine. The University also sponsors a variety of Wellness programs throughout the year for faculty, staff and students.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is designed to help employees and their immediate family members who are troubled by marital, financial, and emotional and substance abuse and other problems. Services provided through the EAP are strictly confidential and free of charge. University EAP services are provided through Atrium Health and The Standard.
