Summary:
The Histology Technician(HT) functions as a key person in processing of the patient specimens for pathological diagnosis. He/she is primarily responsible for the productive quality work within the histology section, assisting the pathologists, pathology assistant and residents. His/her work aids the physician in the diagnosis of disease process as well as in the treatment and monitoring of patient disorders. Strict attention is required in all areas of work to assure proper lab procedure is performed as error may result in permanent loss of patient non-blood specimens or misdiagnosis.
The Histology Technician's role also includes the performance of quality control and instrument maintenance to assure compliance with all regulatory guidelines. He/she performs other duties as assigned.
Must be willing to work as a team and cross-train to fill in for other employees as needed. Must be able to troubleshoot minor instrument problems and analyze basic staining problems. He/she acts as a key person in communicating with clients, physicians, and other medical staff on a daily basis.
The scope of care does not involve direct patient care.
He/she has a commitment to continuing education to upgrade skills in a constantly developing technology.
Requirements:
ASCP Certified candidates preferred.
Computer literacy is useful but can be provided on the job training.
