Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician, working under the supervision and instruction of a licensed Pharmacist, performs procedures and duties relating to all areas of departmental services as delineated by the service’s Scope of Care. For successful job performance, the Pharmacy Technician should be flexible and show keen attention to detail, exhibit initiative, and be willing to work as part of a team. In addition, this individual should be cooperative and willing to cross train to fill in for other employees as necessary. The technician must be able to provide services as appropriate (under the direct supervision of a pharmacist) to meet the needs of the neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient age groups served. The team member may be expected to be cross-trained for provision of services at any of the facilities throughout the system. Job may include Controlled Substance Handling/Dispensing Processes. Level 1 technicians will be responsible for medication dispensing, medication transporting, packing unit-dosed medication, and other basic pharmacy technician duties after training.
Requirements:
This individual should possess basic math and typing skills and must possess attention to detail and the ability to read and follow written instructions. The pharmacy technician should demonstrate proficient computer skills. Institutional pharmacy experience is desirable, while retail pharmacy experience may be beneficial, but neither are required for entry level technician level 1 because onsite training will be provided. General institutional/health care experience may be helpful in the training of a pharmacy technician. Preference will be given to trained institutional pharmacy technicians, those individuals who have completed pharmacy technician training courses, and/or those who have obtained (National) Certified Pharmacy Technician status.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid and active Pharmacy Tech registration in appropriate state
In Virginia - must be enrolled in a program and pass the Board of VA exam within 9 months of hire and register by either passing the VA exam or the national PTCB.
Controlled Substance Diversion Training and Hazardous Drug Management training must be completed within 30 days of hire and annually.
