Johnson City Schools is looking for Sign Language Interpreters to assist teachers in providing academic, social and vocational training to students and to provide assistance to other school staff when and where needed at Science Hill High School.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use technology;
  • Must meet the necessary health and physical qualifications;

Must have an Interpreter Certification or meet the following employment standards:

All non-licensed educational interpreters employed prior to January 1, 2021, shall satisfy the following requirements by January 1, 2021:

  • Obtain a passing score on the written portion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); and
  • Obtain a minimum score of 3.0 on the performance assessment portion of the EIPA.

All non-licensed educational interpreters employed on January 1, 2021 or after, shall satisfy the following requirement:

  • Hold at a minimum and associate’s degree;
  • Obtain a passing score on the written portion of the EIPA; and
  • Obtain a minimum score of 3.0 on the performance assessment portion of the EIPA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work under the direction of one or more certified teachers and/or administrative staff.
  • Providing interpreter services for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Providing voice interpreting as needed.
  • When scheduling permits, providing interpreting for tutoring done by regular classroom teachers.
  • Providing interpreting for school functions outside the classroom, during regularly scheduled school hours.
  • Serving as a liaison to promote good public relations between the deaf/hard of hearing students with peers, staff, faculty members, and parents.
  • Participating as part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students as identified in their individual education plan or as assigned by the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing.
  • Conferring with regular classroom teachers and teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in order to better prepare for interpreting services.
  • Assisting with the collection and correlation of materials used in both the regular and the deaf/hard of hearing classroom work.
  • Attending in-service programs to improve skills necessary to deal with students in the deaf/hard of hearing program.
  • Assisting in maintaining equipment used in the classroom including auditory trainers.
  • Riding the bus and assisting with loading and unloading of students at home and school as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Supervisor of Special Education.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job may require occasional lifting and carrying of objects and children weighing up to 60 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling;
  • Balancing and climbing, including ascending and descending stairs;
  • Walking and occasional running;
  • Stooping, kneeling and/or crawling;
  • Reaching;
  • Handling, fingering;
  • Talking, hearing;
  • Moving classroom furniture; and
  • Vision, correctable to 20/20.

  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure;
  • Ability to direct, control, and/or plan an activity;
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and their underlying principles;

  • Ability to make an evaluations and decisions on the basis of sensory or judgmental criteria;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to perform physical demands;
  • Ability to work with and communicate with students;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing;
  • Ability to maintain appropriate job related appearance and demeanor; and
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a school setting.

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education’s policy on evaluation of classified personnel; compensation will be in accordance with the salary schedule for the position as adopted by the Board.

Work schedule will coincide with the school calendar unless otherwise stated.
