Definition & Duties

Under supervision and in accordance with Iowa law, handle clerical and/or technical duties as assigned. Performs general maintenance and testing, as well as delivery and pick up to/from precincts, of voting equipment and electronic poll books.

Knowledge of & Ability to

  • Basic office practices
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair procedures for computers or office equipment, electronic devices, and machinery
  • English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, and punctuation

Ability to:
  • Represent Johnson County in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner, and in a manner, which avoids bias and conflict of interest, and the appearance of bias and conflict of interest. Perform office duties, including those related to elections, in the same manner.
  • Learn, apply, and articulate departmental policies and procedure
  • Perform tasks with a moderate degree of speed
  • Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties
  • Use a computer for the purpose of data entry and basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database operations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and members of the public
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
  • Interact effectively with persons from widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view
  • Operate common office equipment such as calculators, fax and postage machines, photocopiers, and multi-line telephones

  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Have clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication
  • Have sufficient vision which permits light to moderate production and review a wide variety of materials both in hardcopy and electronic form
  • Have sufficient manual dexterity to make mechanical repairs, hand written notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse
  • Have sufficient personal mobility to complete duties at various worksites
  • Stand, sit, bend, twist, and reach
  • Occasionally lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Work flexible schedule and overtime as required

Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Specific Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Assist in the diagnostics, maintenance, repair, programming and testing of electronic vote-counting equipment, computers and other election equipment according to deadlines, technical specifications and Iowa law.
  • Assist in the delivery of electronic vote-counting equipment before, during, and after an election in a timely fashion.
  • Assist in ensuring the security of voting equipment and media cards.
  • May be asked to perform a variety of tasks that are necessary for the facilitation of an election in accordance with Iowa law.
  • Participate in training and educational opportunities and work-related meetings as requested.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
