Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is responsible for the safe collection, transportation and treatment of wastewater generated by our community. Our work ensures that our lakes, rivers, and streams remain free from disease-causing pathogens and pollutants that are harmful to public health and the environment. Johnson County Wastewater is looking for qualified candidates to fill the position of Maintenance Specialist.  This position works in a team environment to support the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility as well as the off-site pump stations.  They will also support the electrical maintenance and install needs at other locations as needed.  

  • Uses specialized mechanical, maintenance, and repair skills to perform highly technical work in  the repair and maintenance of specialized and complex industrial equipment used in the treatment of wastewater; performs a variety of maintenance or project related tasks; diagnoses and troubleshoots, designs, and proposes corrective measures to complex systems; tests, calibrates, repairs, replaces and constructs various industrial equipment, infrastructure, and systems; serves as subject matter expert in specialized skills and trade.
  • Provides subject matter expertise working with department staff in the design/modification of new and existing systems; ensures test and repair telemetry equipment is reliable; and repairs and maintains complex specialized equipment such as dewatering equipment, cogens, and bar screens.
  • Oversees repairs to equipment being supported or repaired by vendors or contractors; escorts vendors performing contracted services within secure areas; uses specialized skill set to inspect and assess the quality of work performed and provides feedback and guidance regarding quality expectations and deficiencies to ensure contractors accomplish defined bid specifications.
  • Maintains and updates operational and maintenance records, logs and databases; assists with routine and complex tasks related to plant operational activities; researches alternative processes, products, and equipment; may purchase supplies, equipment, parts, and other items needed in the operations and maintenance of the facilities.
  • Performs various tasks requiring equipment, vehicle, and tool operation; uses a variety of small and large tools and operates a variety of light and medium duty equipment.
  • Provides guidance and training to other staff on maintenance tasks; responds to emergency and rain/overflow events; serves as the lead on a variety of projects or complex tasks by directing and coordinating the work of other employees, contractors, and vendors.

 

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent; four years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of complex and specialized industrial equipment; a driver’s license; and an acceptable driving record are required.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions.  Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

 

Preferred Job Requirements:

Vo-Tech training or certification in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or other relevant field and two years of experience in wastewater or water system operation, maintenance, cleaning, inspection, or repair are preferred.

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
