The position is located at 11231 Mastin Street, Overland Park 66210. This position provides excellent benefits, including health insurance, wellness programs and discounts, retirement programs, and various other discount programs.This position will remain open until 9 : 00 PM, Monday, February 10, 2025Residents bring their unwanted hazardous materials to the Household Hazardous Waste facility for the safe disposal, recycling, or reuse of those items, and this position will be responsible for the daily operation of the program to include the following duties :
- Provides excellent customer service by assisting customers with questions regarding appropriate handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Schedules drop off appointments at the collection facility including residential homes and small quantity businesses.
- Maintains hazardous waste chemical inventory according to Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) regulations and permit requirements.
- Sorts, packages, and labels all wastes according to applicable regulations. Prepares shipping containers for storing various chemicals that are collected according to regulations and facility permit requirements. Coordinates shipment of hazardous waste chemicals by contractor to permanent disposal facility.
- Identifies and quantifies household hazardous waste (HHW) chemicals by chemical name or physical testing; separates chemicals by type within the broader categories of corrosives, flammables, toxics, and reactive.
- Prioritizes sustainable material management through reuse and recycling of products, as feasible.
- Assists in promoting the Household Hazardous Materials Program at public events and various outreach opportunities.
- Maintains multiple programs including small quantity business, paint reuse, non-for-profit partners, mobile collection.
- Coordinates / schedules various non-hazardous collection vendors for recycled materials.
- Maintains / prepares annual reporting requirements and detailed records of waste disposal and recycling for various state and federal compliance agencies.
- Preforms weekly site safety inspections and always ensures safety of the staff and the facility.Job RequirementsAssociate's degree in environmental science, Biology, or related science field with two years (2) experience in environmental work, such as processing chemicals and / or household hazardous waste, or laboratory experience are required.KDHE 24 Hour HHW HAZWOPER Certification required within first year of employment.Applicant must submit to and pass a pre-employment, post-offer, and annual Hazard Materials Physical Examination and Respiratory Fit Test.Preferred Job Requirements : Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Biology, or related science field.Forklift Operator Certification
- Experience may be substituted for education, and education may be substituted for experience.Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions : Within sixty (60) days of hire, employees (select DHE and EMS positions) must produce proof of immunization, proof of immunity, proof that immunization is medically contraindicated, submit a written objection to immunization based upon a sincerely held religious belief, or receive vaccination for the following : Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR); Tetanus Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (TDAP); and Varicella (Chickenpox).Successful completion of Hazard Materials Physical Examination which includes Blood and Urine samples, auditory test, spirometry test, chest x-ray, Electrocardiogram (EKG), test for Hepatitis B plus vaccination, and a respiratory fit test.Must be able to lift 50 pounds.Must be able to work in all weather conditions throughout the year in an outdoor facility.
