What are the responsibilities and job description for the Webmaster position at Johnson County?
Under general supervision of the Information Technology Director, designs, develops and maintains the Johnson County website for delivery of information to the general public on County services and to promote County events/activities. Maintains an internal employee intranet site and assist departments/offices with posting information. Provides MS Office support.
- Build and maintain websites using the Drupal content management system, frontend and backend
- Drupal 9/10/11 site building and configuration
- Drupal implementation best practices
- Working knowledge of several programming languages, preferably PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Proficiency in using Version Control System such as Git or SVN
- Graphic design principles and software
- Microsoft Office and Outlook software
- Image editing application programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and other 2D / 3D graphical applications
- Photography / computer imaging software
- English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary and proofreading skills
- Industry standards in website development
- Comprehensive understanding of web accessibility standards and guidelines, including WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)

Associate’s degree in computer science or related field AND four (4) years of experience in information technology to include three (3) years of experience in planning, design, development, implementation and administration of web sites/web pages OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Special requirements: Valid driver’s license and insurable under County liability coverage. May also require use of personal vehicle for official business. Must pass background check.

- Optimize Drupal websites for performance and security.
- Debug and resolve Drupal-related issues and errors.
- Stay informed about Drupal updates and best practices.
- Develop new web pages, web page templates, and modules for our websites within the Drupal CMS environment.
- Conducts software testing and release activities.
- Updating Drupal sites to keep them secure and compliant with latest standards.
- Creates clear, concise, informative, and appealing web pages.
- Develops and maintains logical website navigation enabling users to access information efficiently.
- Maintains and reviews existing web pages for accuracy and currency.
- Develops standards for content, layout, format, and user interface for the web pages.
- Trains and advises personnel from other departments with posting content to the County web pages on both the internet and intranet sites.
- Ensures county web pages comply with appropriate policies, guidelines, and standards.
- Ensures web site meets generally accepted accessibility standards on a wide variety of platforms and browsers.
- Designs, programs and integrates systems, scripting graphics, multimedia components, and database elements involved in online services to the public.
- Analyzes traffic to website and recommends any necessary programming changes.
- Oversees total quality management of site including evaluation of links and usability.
- Promotes the County’s web site (to the public, search engines, other governmental agencies, etc.).
- Responds to emails and phone calls regarding website and other questions.
- Develops long-range web plan.
- Prepares weekly status report. Researches and recommends information for the budget to the Director.
- Keeps abreast of technological developments. Evaluates and suggests new projects and technologies.
- Attends work-related meetings, conferences and seminars.
- Provides back up for Help Desk Specialist.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Departmental and County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
