What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavior Specialist position at Johnson Elementary School?
This position is to provide flexible support to both student and staff surrounding academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of the students. This position looks at producing a positive change in student behavior by using appropriate interventions along with improving learning and personal growth. Establish effective communication and work with academic teams, administration, outside service providers and parent/guardians to create the most effective support plan that will benefit both the student and school. They will engage in Restorative practices with all aspects of the school community to motivate student engagement and to help resolve conflict.
Duties and responsibilities:
*Provide behavioral, emotional and academic support for dysregulated students, so they can re-engage in their academic and social settings successfully and to help the development of critical thinking and problem solving
*To help with the Restorative process with individual student, groups and faculty/staff to enhance school climate and conflict resolution
* Basic knowledge of behavioral data that is collected to help put supports in place
*Working with school administration to investigate bullying and harassment complaints and educate/support students
*Perform duties assigned by Principal to maintain school safety and positive learning environment
* Ability to apply systems of verbal and non-verbal strategies to de-escalate unsafe situations and behaviors
*Work collaboratively with peers and school personnel to promote and support the schools goals and objectives
* Maintain meaningful and consistent expectations and routines for SSC space, students and others.
*Interact with students across all settings and model positive behavior.
*Assists in creating and implementing interventions and behavior plans that support students to make safe choices around students and within the school.
*Maintain data for students utilizing space. This includes: why they are utilizing the SSC, time spent in the space, and where they are coming from.
*Attend meetings with teams, administration, and outside support services to ensure all members of the team have the same information.
*Process with all students that use the SSC. This includes: check in/check out, assisting in de-escalation, mentoring, and referring students to other resources for support (nurse, counselor, planning, and/or admin).
*Assist in determining when students are ready to return to class. This includes active listening, problem solving, and body language awareness.
*Provide classroom teachers with support by consistent communication regarding students. This communication includes student behavior, classroom assignments, tests and projects.
*Work with all aspects of the school ,Administrator, guidance, special educators, outside services and home regarding students overall performance
* Provides classroom coverage for a variety of classes on days when there are no substitute teachers available.
* Perform Physical Interventions as needed, after receiving appropriate training
