We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Part-Time Sewer to join our small but dedicated team at Johnson Furniture Manufacturing Company. In this role, you will be responsible for sewing fabric covers, cushions, and other upholstery elements for custom and standard furniture pieces. The ideal candidate will have experience with industrial sewing machines, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for creating high-quality, durable products. This is a part-time position with flexible hours, offering a great opportunity for someone looking to work in a creative, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Sewing & Upholstery:
- Use industrial sewing machines to sew fabric, leather, and other materials for furniture upholstery, cushions, and custom pieces.
- Accurately follow patterns, templates, and design specifications to ensure the proper fit and finish of upholstered components.
- Assemble cushion covers, seat backs, and other fabric-based parts of furniture pieces, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and durability.
- Work with various types of fabrics, including cotton, linen, leather, and synthetic materials, adjusting sewing techniques as needed for each material.
Quality Control:
- Inspect completed sewn pieces for defects, ensuring that each item meets company standards for quality, appearance, and durability.
- Make necessary repairs or adjustments to the sewing work as needed to achieve the desired results.
Material Preparation & Maintenance:
- Measure, cut, and prepare fabrics and other materials for sewing, ensuring accurate dimensions and alignment for upholstery components.
- Maintain sewing equipment, including cleaning, oiling, and making minor adjustments to machines.
- Monitor inventory levels of sewing materials and fabrics, informing the Production Manager when supplies are running low.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with the production team, including designers, upholsterers, and the production manager, to ensure timely completion of orders.
- Communicate any issues with materials, patterns, or machine operation to ensure quick resolution.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, following safety guidelines for equipment use.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a sewer, upholsterer, or in a similar role. Experience with industrial sewing machines is preferred.
- Ability to follow patterns and blueprints to create precise and high-quality sewn products.
- Attention to detail and high standards for craftsmanship and quality.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also collaborating with the team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adjust work based on project requirements.
- Previous experience in furniture manufacturing or upholstery is a plus, but not required.
- Flexibility to work part-time hours, including some evenings or weekends if necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit and work for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs as needed for materials and furniture components.
- Comfortable working with sewing machines and tools.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
