Lead external innovation for AI/ML spanning research, discovery, and generative AI with the objective of forming partnerships that advance JJIM R&D’s capabilities and portfolio. Key activities include developing a deep understanding of the business needs and opportunities, landscaping external companies and capabilities, engaging with external parties to diligence capabilities, data, and potential to collaborate, and leading the development of strategic partnerships through to deal formation/execution.
This role requires substantial engagement with senior leadership in JJIM, as well as with scientists and business stakeholders at all levels of the organization in DSDH, TAs, DPDS, and JJT. The role also requires effective engagement with business and scientific leadership at current/potential partner organizations. A combination of deep scientific/technical expertise in relevant areas with strong strategic, operational, and communication acumen is critical. The individual should have expertise in AI/ML including generative AI, an exciting and rapidly developing area.

$160,000 - $276,000

Responsibilities
- Landscape and assess external capabilities of strategic importance to J&J within the scope of the role AI/ML for research/discovery and development, including generative AI
- Source new opportunities and lead execution of due diligence, scientific scoping and deal making with target strategic partner companies and organizations, working in close partnership with transaction functions and partners in J&J
- Oversee delivery of ongoing external strategic partnerships, evaluating research/business progress and providing oversight/direction
- Contribute to overall strategy development for use of AI/ML
- Support of evaluation of applications for JLABS
- Active member of External Innovation leadership team DSDH
- Master’s degree is a min requirement; PhD is highly preferred.
- Degree within a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Chemistry, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biology
- A minimum of 8 years professional experience is required
- Experience with strategic partnerships (e.g., search and eval, diligence teams, scoping partnerships, transacting) is required
- Knowledge of, interest in, and excited by emerging developments of AI/ML and their application to research / discovery, with the ability to translate to actional partnership
- Strong, strategic, operational, and business acumen. Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to navigate a complex matrix environment
