Job Location : Candidates are preferred in any one of the eight Texas offices including Houston, Round Rock, Austin, McKinney, San Antonio, Shiner, Longview, or El Paso. Candidates will also be considered in any JMT Office Nationwide. Remote employees not within commuting distance of a JMT office location will also be considered (only for highly qualified candidates).
Position Summary : Manages various environmental investigation, permitting, ecological restoration, and impact analyses projects, applying knowledge of environmental practices and regulations. Manages, directs, and oversees work of Environmental Scientists.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Design and lead aquatic field surveys for mussels, fish, crayfish, and / or other macroinvertebrates. Requisite capabilities include species identification, data collection, specimen preservation, and management and supervision of on-site field staff.
- Produce technical survey reports in accordance with current scientific writing standards, regulatory agency requirements and / or function as a technical reviewer for aquatic ecology reports prepared by other staff.
- Contribute to aquatic ecology sections of complex, multidisciplinary environmental documentation efforts, including Biological Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, and Management Plans.
- Participate in management, maintenance, and calibration of aquatic field equipment (e.g., boats, scuba, sample meters, etc.).
- Manage all aspects related to aquatic ecology for small to medium sized projects, including personnel resourcing, field efforts, document production, and client and agency coordination.
- Actively engage in marketing activities, including client communication and preparation of technical proposals containing scope, timelines, and cost estimates.
- Participate in technical, industry, and / or other professional conferences.
- Mentoring staff to foster growth and development of junior staff.
- Actively participate in terrestrial or other non-aquatic work during periods of diminished workload.
- Leads and manages various state, federal, and local regulatory permit application processes, such as Section 404 / 401, Endangered Species Act Section 7 & 10 Consultation, NPDES, etc.
- Oversees Environmental Scientists’ work in field investigations and assessments, Environmental documentation preparation, and permit application preparation
- Monitors schedules, budgets and manpower requirements
- Hires, trains, develops, mentors, and conducts performance reviews for staff
- Leads preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to RFP’s, including teaming arrangements and attending and presenting at project / contract interviews
- Participates in and assists Section Heads with strategic planning and Business Development efforts, including leading initiatives

Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment approximately 60% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Office work is performed with adequate lighting and temperature, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.
Field work is required approximately 40% of the time and is conducted outdoors in heat / cold, wet / humid, and dry / arid conditions. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Field work will also require swimming, scuba, and driving watercraft. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
