Summary:
Needed: A person responsible for helping the production crew at a 100-acre ornamental plant nursery in SE North Carolina. This position is an entry-level position with a possibility of becoming an assistant grower. It requires working outdoors and maintaining plants. This individual will do plant production work such as pruning, moving plants, weeding, fertilizing, or ground maintenance.
Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability. Even though a horticulture degree isn’t required, it would be preferred. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Minimum Qualifications:
- An interest in plants.
- Alert and attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn.
- Hard working. Quickly find new work when finished with current work.
- Operate a tractor with manual transmission.
- Must be able to multitask effectively.
- Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must be willing to work extra hours if needed, weekends, and after hours to ensure productivity of other nursery functions.
- Must wear ankle-high work boots and adhere to other safety policies.
- Successfully pass drug screening and post-offer physical assessment.
- Documents of authorization to work in the USA.

Essential Functions
- Stand for 4 hours at a time pruning plants.
- Able to identify plants and match the correct tag with the correct plant.
- Plant care: weeding, pruning, mowing, watering, and applying dry fertilizer when not potting.
- Basic maintenance of nursery: installing ground mat, installing shade cloth to shade areas, moving gravel by wheelbarrow, and shoveling gravel to fill in holes.
- Climb a ladder to a height of 10 ft.
- Winter protection: Covering and uncovering plants with cold protection blanket, poly film, and shade cloth.
- Basic construction: using hammers, power saws, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers.
- Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
- Able to lift 50lb to waist height
- Lift and carry 15 lbs. in each hand.
- Able to walk and stand for 4-hour durations.
- Able to kneel, stoop, squat, bend, reach and grasp.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- This position involves outdoor exposure during the workday (heat, cold, rain, snow, ice)
- This role routinely uses standard equipment such as tractors.
- This position must also routinely work around chemicals used to maintain health of plants(insecticides, fungicides, PGR’s, fertilizers) which requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment such as respirators, Tyvek suits, knee high boots and gloves.
