What are the responsibilities and job description for the Math Implementation Specialist (2025-26) position at Johnston Community School District?
JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of, and in coordination with, the Directors of Elementary and Secondary Teaching & Learning, the Math Implementation Specialist assists with reviewing, implementing and assessing the district’s mathematics curriculum and practices, as well as implementing professional learning and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes in the area of mathematics.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or Mathematics
- Valid Iowa teaching license with K-8 or 5-12 Mathematics endorsement
- Minimum of four years of successful elementary and/or secondary mathematics teaching experience
- Prior experience in a leadership role
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum Development and Implementation
- Works closely with Teaching & Learning Directors to develop and implement a comprehensive, standards-aligned mathematics curriculum.
- Explores curricular resources and gathers background information aligned to high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).
- Provides guidance on the selection of instructional materials, resources, and technology tools to enhance mathematics instruction.
- Organizes proficiency scale templates and supports teachers’ use during instruction.
- Organizes and updates PreK-12 program documents.
Instructional Coaching and Professional Development
- Observes classrooms, provides feedback, and models effective instructional strategies to enhance teacher effectiveness.
- Supports collaborative planning processes for PLC teams.
- Assists with the creation and delivery of professional learning aligned to enhance mathematics implementation for teaching staff.
MTSS Implementation
- Assists with development and implementation of district MTSS processes in the area of mathematics.
- Assists with analysis of student performance data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement.
- Provides support in the areas of assessment communications, math placement determinations, and development of MTSS playbook.
- Organizes, conducts and engages in learning walks with Instructional Leadership Teams.
- Organizes and presents data sets for all stakeholders.
Collaboration and Communication
- Fosters collaboration among teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to create a cohesive approach to mathematics instruction.
- Collaborates with district and building staff to plan and facilitate events for families to increase knowledge of mathematics content and pedagogy.
Additional Functions and Responsibilities
- Engages in professional learning related to functions and responsibilities of position.
- Completes all required training.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

- Strong foundational knowledge of evidence-based mathematics instruction and research on teaching mathematics
- Knowledge of best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment in the area of mathematics
- Knowledge of effective instructional coaching practices to support teacher growth, enhance student learning, and promote the implementation of high-quality instructional strategies
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data-driven decision-making

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Moderate sitting, walking and standing

- Carrying and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Use of hands to finger, handle and feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus
- Indoor work environment primarily in an office or school setting
- Ability to travel within district
Terms of Employment: 194-day contract with additional work covered by stipend.
