Job Title: Substance Use Interventionist
(Time-Limited Position through June 2027)
Location: Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability

Term of Employment: 10 Months
Salary: State Salary Scale
Reports To: Executive Director of Student Services
Job Overview:
The Substance Use Intervention Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing programs aimed at addressing substance use among JCPS students. The role involves working closely with students, families, school staff, and community resources to provide education, support, and intervention services.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or masters degree in counseling.
- Professional licensure in School Counseling or School Social Work.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in substance use intervention, in a school setting, is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of substance use issues and effective intervention strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, school staff, and community resources.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to working with students and families.
- Support and implement Board of Education policy as related to school and student situations and communicate this information to students, family, and community members as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development and Implementation
- Implement, monitor and enhance district intervention plan for students with substance use incidents.
- Coordinate and conduct educational workshops and training sessions for students, parents, and staff.
- Collaborate with school administrators to integrate substance use intervention into processes and protocols.
- Note: due to funding source restrictions work will focus solely on intervention, not prevention efforts.
Student Support and Intervention
- Utilize existing systems to identify students involved in substance use on campus.
- Refer to individual and group counseling sessions to address substance use.
- Provide access to resources and referrals to appropriate services as needed.
Collaboration and Outreach
- Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive support for students.
- Collaborate with school counselors, nurses, and social workers to address student needs.
- Develop partnerships with local health and social service agencies to facilitate access to additional resources and support.
Training and Professional Development
- Stay current with research and best practices in substance use intervention.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development for school staff on substance use issues and intervention strategies.
Policy and Compliance
- Assist in the development and enforcement of school policies related to substance use.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding student substance use.
- Prepare reports and documentation required by the school district and other regulatory bodies.
Working Conditions:
- Must have valid NC Driver’s License.
- Will require travel to community organizations, resources, and home visits.
- May involve some evening or weekend hours for meetings, training, and events.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Executive Director of Student Services or assigned administrator based on the fulfillment of the responsibilities and adherence to district policies.
