ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
General Description of Duties:
The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, working directly under the Superintendent of Schools, will provide leadership in developing, achieving, and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services.

Qualification and Requirements:
• Must hold a valid RI Department of Education Superintendent of Schools Certification;
• Master’s Degree in Public School Administration and/or District Level Administrator PK-12 required, and a CAGS or Doctorate is preferred, in addition to a background of experience which is broad and varied;
• Preferably, advanced graduate work in education in the areas of curriculum development, supervision, and/or instructional growth;
• Such alternative to the above qualification as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the policies and related directives of the Johnston Public Schools;
• Promotes the attainment of the District’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan;
• Assists the Superintendent in directing the administration and coordination of the school department’s educational programs;
• Assists in the preparation and administration of the budget;
• Assists in planning for the maintenance and expansion of all school facilities;
• Attends School Committee meetings and prepares such reports for the Committee as the Superintendent may request;
• Supervises, evaluates, and directs the work of principals and all supervisory personnel;
• Develops and manages the Consolidated Resource Plan (CRP) for the district;
• Researches grant opportunities, writes grants, and oversees the writing of grants as needed. Acts as the clearing house for all grants;
• Serves upon assignments by the Superintendent as a resource person to all supervisors and directors in the school system;
• Establishes a program for the ongoing evaluation of instruction and curriculum assessment;
• Interprets the present curriculum and proposed curriculum changes to the School Committee, the administration, the staff, and the general public in developing and implementing the general philosophy and goals of the total school curriculum;
• Provides leadership in working with principals and teacher committees in organizing and coordinating grade levels and departmental meetings in order to effect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the school system;
• Oversees a district-wide professional development plan and program. Coordinates all formal efforts of the professional staff in projects of curriculum improvement;
• Coordinates the selection of textbooks and instructional materials for the school system through the use of faculty committees;
• Assumes responsibility for developing curriculum for any new course mandated by the legislature or School Committee;
• Assumes responsibility for reviewing, evaluating, and reporting results of the system-wide and state testing programs, and for other evaluative measures used by the schools;
• Maintains liaison and active participation with educational leaders in curriculum, instruction, and assessment at state, regional, and national levels;
• Coordinates development of district’s strategic plan. Provides assistance to individual schools in planning and implementing school strategic plans. Coordinates district and school efforts in strategic planning;
• Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Superintendent may from time-to-time assign.
Skills Required:
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, test data, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public;
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts;
• Ability to utilize current technology for instruction, communication, data analysis, and access to research;
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables;
• Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. • • • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school committee policies.
