CUSTODIAN JOB DESCRIPTION
DEFINITION:
Under direct supervision, performs routine cleaning work in the schools, offices, and other facilities of the District. Carries out a written schedule of cleaning and maintenance tasks and job-related work as required. Custodian positions are typically assigned to day or night shifts and may include weekend, holiday, or school break schedules. Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The following is a list of duties that are representative of the position and include but are not limited to:
Essential Duties:
• Sweep, scrub, mop, and wax floors; vacuum and clean carpets
• Dust and polish furniture and woodwork
• Empty and clean waste receptacles
• Clean restroom, sink and drinking fountains
• Wash windows and walls, and remove graffiti; polish metal work
• Clean window blinds
• Maintain property security and vandalism control of the school
• Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and setting up rooms
• Prepare fields for special events and/or athletic events, at the elementary and/or secondary level
• Take care of equipment and materials and make minor non-technical repairs, replace lights; adjust shades or blinds, furniture and desks, change heating filters
• Inspect grounds, parking lots, and sidewalks and report any unsafe conditions
• Inspect for and report safety problems that cannot be easily remedied
• Properly dispose of hazardous and infectious materials, in accordance with district policies and procedures
• Keep informed of current methods, practices, regulations and guidelines pertaining to school plant operation and maintenance
Other Related Duties
• Attendance and participation in annual training to meet new safety and/or technology standards required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Lead Custodian, Principal, or supervisor
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
1. Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; sustain moderate to heavy physical effort for eight (8) hours
2. Ability to work in a safe and effective manner in the following; at various elevated heights on ladders, scaffolding, rigging, and roofs, or in narrow or restricted spaces, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time
3. Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold conversations in normal range (approximately 60 decibels)
4. Employee must have visual acuity for the purposes of reading printed materials such as labels, safety materials, equipment manuals, etc.
5. Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead
6. Physical stamina sufficient to climb slopes, stairs, ramps, and ladders
7. Physical strength sufficient to frequently lift and/or carry 50 or more pounds; occasionally lift 80 or more pounds with assistance
8. Occasionally push and/or pull a variety of tools, equipment, or objects weighing 80 or more pounds
9. Exhibit a full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation, shoulder abduction and adduction, elbow flexion and extension, shoulder extension and flexion range of motion capable of reaching and operating bus and communications controls
10. Exhibit a full range of motion for back lateral flexion, hip flexion and extension, and knee flexion
11. Work with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction
12. Physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, pollen, specific agents/chemicals, cleaners, foul smells
13. Work in a wide range of temperatures; work in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to extreme weather conditions which include but are not limited to; heat, cold, rain, wind, and high humidity
14. Demonstrate manual dexterity sufficient to write, use a telephone, operate and maneuver demanding cleaning equipment, machinery, and vehicles such as floor polishers, carpet cleaners, extension window cleaners, etc.
15. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions; and demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to drive a motor vehicle and to respond to emergency situations
QUALIFICATIONS:
• A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate selection process for this position
Education and/or Experience:
• High school diploma or GED equivalency sufficient to assure the ability to read and write English and to perform mathematical calculations at the level required for successful job performance
• Two (2) years of related experience in a similar position
Knowledge of:
• Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment used in custodial work
• Requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition
• Basic English usage, oral and written communications
• Safe vehicle driving practices
Licenses and Certificates:
• Possession of a valid Rhode Island driver’s license
Ability to:
• Understand and carry out assigned work with minimal supervision
• Perform heavy physical labor
• Ability to use cleaning methods and equipment with skill and efficiency
• Use heavy industrial buffers, steam cleaners, and other equipment safely and effectively
• Possess an appropriate Rhode Island driver’s license
• Learn schedules, procedures, equipment and methods used in custodial work
• Drive power-driven equipment safely and efficiently
• Quickly and effectively diagnose problems and take appropriate action to resolve them
• Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing
• Meet the physical requirements necessary for the successful performance of required duties
• Establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including students, school personnel, parents, vendors, co-workers, and the community
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
• Keep materials, equipment, and facilities in a clean and orderly fashion
• Store and use hazardous materials in a safe manner
• Count and perform accurate simple arithmetic calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and maintain accurate records
• Use initiative and judgment in discussing problems involving office practices and policies with the public and district staff
• Read, understand, interpret, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of the office, the District, and the State of Rhode Island
• Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
• Learn, plan, formulate and execute federal, state, district, and departmental policies, procedures and directives, in accordance with assigned duties

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous experience in a school district or government entity
• Previous custodial experience/training
