- Basic understanding of clinical procedures and orthodontic terminology
- Preparing patients for examination and treatment
- Assisting in infection control
- Assisting dentist or dental professional in procedures, and handling any emergencies
- Taking and managing patient records
- Taking dental x-rays and caring and cleaning x-ray equipment
- Providing post-treatment instructions from the dental professional
- Taking intraoral scans using the itero scanner
- Cleaning and disinfecting dental equipment, instruments, and patient areas
- Educating patients on proper oral health and at-home directions for care
- Front desk administration: contacting patients, scheduling appointments, ordering and stocking supplies
- Motivated to learn and implement change
- On time with appointments
- Thorough note taking and chart review
- Sharing ideas with team and management
- Changing out wires and brackets
- Adjusting fit of clear aligners such as Invisalign
- Adjusting retainer fit
Orthodontic care is a complex task that requires precise movements and the use of delicate instruments to ensure patient comfort. Our assistants must be able to make choices and solve problems, even under demanding, high-pressure circumstances. Orthodontic office tend to be busier then other dental practices and it is important to be quick on your feet, moving and operating equipment, and cleaning and preparing instruments. Successful orthodontic assistants need to be comfortable working in a team, with good communication skills, a balance of leadership and listening skills, and patience and respect for your fellow employees.
