Position Overview:
Seeking a dynamic and motivated Director of Bands to join for the School of Art, Music, and Performance. The Director will be responsible for leading and overseeing the Typhoon marching band, concert band, and parade organizing activities, as well as providing applied lessons in their specific area, The Director will play a key role in student recruitment, advising, administrative duties, and ensuring the continued success and growth of the band program. This position provides an exciting opportunity to shape the musical education of our students while contributing to the vibrant campus community. The director reports to the Dean of School of Art, Music, and Performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Marching Band (Football Season):
- Lead and conduct the marching band during football season, ensuring high levels of performance and student engagement.
- Plan and coordinate rehearsals, halftime shows, and other related activities.
- Collaborate and oversee music selection, drill design, and performance logistics.
- Parade Organizing:
- Plan, organize, and lead the band in parades and other community performances.
- Coordinate transportation, equipment, and other logistical details for parade participation.
- Symphonic Band:
- Conduct the symphonic band, selecting appropriate repertoire and fostering a positive and inclusive ensemble environment.
- Plan and execute rehearsals and performances, including concerts and festivals.
- Private Applied Lessons:
- Provide individual applied lessons (high or low brass preferred) to students, assisting with technique, performance skills, and repertoire development.
- Recruitment & Student Advisement:
- Actively recruit new students to the band program through high school visits, auditions, and outreach events.
- Advise students in academic and musical matters, helping them with course selections and career planning.
- Administrative & Scheduling Duties:
- Manage scheduling for all band rehearsals, performances, and events, ensuring effective time management and student participation.
- Maintain program budgets, inventory, and any necessary records for band activities.
- Work closely with the dean and other faculty members to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
- Collaboration & Community Engagement:
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to support the college’s mission and enhance the music program’s visibility and success.
- Encourage student involvement in other musical activities, such as ensembles, chamber music, or music education.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in music, Music Education, or a related field
- Proven experience in leading marching bands, concert bands, and/or related ensembles.
- Strong proficiency in applied instrument performance
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in student recruitment and advisement.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Music or Music Education.
- Experience in high school or college-level music program administration.
- Knowledge and experience with marching band drill design and performance.
- Familiarity with various music software tools for arranging, teaching, and planning.
- Strong proficiency in brass instrument performance, with a preference for experience teaching private brass lessons
