What are the responsibilities and job description for the Patient Care Technician (PCT) position at Jones Memorial Hospital?
Statement of Purpose:
To provide personal care and assist in activities of daily living for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients under the direction and supervision of charge nurse.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide bed baths or assists patients with bathing. Provides or assists patients with combing of hair. Cleans dentures or assists patients with oral hygiene as needed.
- Assists patients in toileting procedures. Provides and places bedpans and urinals as needed.
- May measure intake and output and reports to appropriate individual.
- Assists patients with meals. Feeds patients if needed.
- Answers patient call lights promptly and refers patient’s request to appropriate individual.
- Reports any observed changes in patient’s status to nurse. Reports all activities and observations to nurse. Does not document in the patient record.
- May assist nurse with personal care of complex patients. May NOT deliver treatments or care for complex or unstable patients. Does not provide care for pediatric or neonatal patients. May assist with caring for patients in isolation after completion of Infection Control educational requirements.
- Makes occupied and unoccupied beds.
- May transfer patients from bed to chair, chair to bed per activity orders. May assist staff with Hoyer lift and stretcher transfers. May assist patients with ambulation.
- Adheres to infection control principles. Utilizes universal precautions. May care for utensils, equipment, and laundry to help insure orderliness of the unit.
- Fulfills competency expectations through completion of educational modules in MyPath and/or continued academic pursuits in a program of nursing.
- May do vital signs after accuracy and competency assessed.
- In the Emergency Department, may perform EKGs, glucometers, and obtain labs after accuracy and competency assessed.
- When Staffing needs dictate, may work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalency required. Completion of certified Nursing Assistant program or one month on –site training by LPN/RN/qualified PCT, or completion of one semester of an approved LPN or RN program which includes clinical practice. Requires current BLS certification.
EXPERIENCE: One month (preferred).
CONTACTS: Frequent contact with patients, employees, visitors and physicians.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Stands and walks most of the day. Moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to cuts, burns, infections, communicable diseases, strains and injuries from patients and equipment.
