Overview
The Civil Estimator is responsible for the overall planning and coordinating efforts to produce comprehensive civil project takeoffs and cost estimates. This position will take a lead role in providing data and cost analysis for estimate reviews and presentations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilizes the company-approved costing methodology, data, and systems to present estimate results in a detailed breakdown format suitable for use by the operations team
- Prepares cost estimates assuring that all necessary costs are detailed and included in the estimate, such as management services, equipment, and material costs, construction costs, operating costs, and other costs associated with wet pipeline projects
- Prepares project cost estimates from the client’s RFQ documents and drawings and any other information learned during the pre-bid showing
- Know and be able to explain the details behind each estimate, including the basis of the man-hours allocated for each task, personnel resources needed to execute each task, etc.
- Maintains meticulous cost estimating tools including databases, spreadsheets, and other computer-based applications to keep updated information on past performance and industry standards
- Maintains lines of communications between company departments, project managers, and clients regarding cost estimating activities
- Assists project manager with alternative project execution approaches based on the scope of work and the most cost-effective execution methods available
- Provides timely quotes (margin, profit, and quote sheet)
- Travel is required to visit project sites for pre-bid visits, walk-throughs with clients, and project kickoffs.
- Other tasks include but are not limited to preparing process flow diagrams, datasheets, and technical job reports
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- At least three (3) years of related experience in earthwork takeoffs and project cost estimating/project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with civil construction is a plus
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil3D is a plus
- Experience with site project management and project scheduling is a plus
- Experience with earthwork takeoff software (Agtek, Carlson, Trimble, etc.) preferred
- Experience with on-screen takeoffs preferred
- HCSS Heavybid estimate software experience preferred
- Proficient written and oral communication skills
- Strong computer experience with Microsoft Office; specifically, Excel
- Works both independently and in a collaborative team-oriented environment
- Time management skills
- Attentive to detail, creative and resourceful
- High level of organizational and mathematical skills
